We had a Hyundai salesman explain leasing to us a while back, simply.  They calculate the expected value of the car three years out versus the sales price and you pay that amount (plus interest).  They were promoting a 0% lease option at the time, which made no sense to me, but does now.

If you buy a Porsche for example, depreciation is relatively small so leasing can appear to be a very good option for that one.

I think there are situations where it can be more financially viable to lease rather than buy.

That said, I think most individuals who lease cars do it in order to drive a better car than they could afford to buy.

Why buy a 7-year old Honda Civic for $15K (maybe $500/mo over 36 month financing) when you could be driving a BRAND NEW BMW for just $499 a month?

I mean, sure, in 3 years you'll have a Honda Civic worth $10K that'll probably run reliably at least another 5 years, or you'll have nothing at all to show for it.

But you'll look sexy a f in that 3-series!

Yeah, I agree, most lease because of that.  Car payments are much higher obviously than a lease payment.

My daughter leased a Hyundai Tucson because she wasn't sure what she'd need in three years.  Fair enough.

I lease purely for the fact that I don't want to deal with car issues. I was one who use to never have a car payment.  If I needed a car and had a couple thousand dollars that was the car value that I purchased. If it was $500, I bought a beater.  I would drive them into the ground, nurse than until it couldn't be.  One time I had a clutch going out of a car. It was already badly beat up by an airborne express driver hitting me. (wasn't worth putting the money from the settlement back into the car), so I crawled along to a junk yard and traded it for a radiator for my other car.  Back in those days I did all my own repairs, these days with all the computerization, repairs are beyond me and my time is more valuable than what it would take to do the repairs even if I could.  About 10 years ago, living here in Phoenix, I had a car with 250K miles on it, both front window mechanisms were broken so they windows wouldn't go down. My AC went out and was going to cost a few thousand dollars to fix.  I decided that that point I was tired of dealing with all the crap and decided to have a car payment. I had managed to get to 53yo without ever having a car payment.  When exploring I decided that a lease was better than a purchase and that I would rather just exchange the lease every 3 years knowing that the car wouldn't have time to develop mechanical problems. And I get the latest and greatest inovations.

It seems a lot of us used to do m ost of our own repairs.  I'd spend several hours a month on my '73 Nova once it got past 3-4 years.  It needed a lot of stuff a modern car doesn't need.  They were maintenance nightmares back then but we didn't notice.

I take the GTI to the dealer once a year for about $100 for an oil change and that has been it, so far.  Knock knock.

If you made it to 53 without ever having a car payment, you're not the type I'm talking about lol :)

3 series is not good. 5 series minimum.

Feel the same about the M-B C class. E class minimum. S Class optimum. We'll see.

Been 30 or so years since I've had a car payment.

That could change. We'll see.

Bought a 1995 Volvo 850 GLT in 1997 for $18K cash. Drove it until 2016 (when I got the Benz I have now, which was bought by my company).

I put 454K miles on that Volvo and sold it for $3.5K!!

The kind of people I'm talking about couldn't come close to affording to lease a 5-series.

My point is that they *shouldn't* be stretching just to afford the lease payment on a 3-series because if they have to lease just to afford it, well, they can't actually afford it.

The 3 series back in the day was a competent sports sedan, they basically defined that market.  But most who had one drove it like they would a Camry.  We've all followed some on a cloverleaf and see it.  Cadillac makes better sports sedans than BMW today but it's a dying market.

There are a lot of competent durable sedans today available for not much but hardly anyone wants one.  We stroll through a parking lot and everything seems like an "SUV
kind of thing, often RAV4s and CRVs.

I like SUV's too, but not a Rav 4. That's not useful for much. It's non-utility at best.

The Volvo XC 90 is nice. I like the XT 6. M-B GLE will likely be the choice. GLS is just a little too big.

A small "SUV" thing is fine for us I reackon, boring but fine.  I guess.  I showed a RAV 4 to my wife and she said it was too large for her.  The even smaller "quasiSUV' things have poor acceleration and that's a no for her (and me).  She likes Bimmers so it's probably the X1 for us if they fix their start=stop gadget.  I've yet to look at one or sit in one and with some cars that is a no for me also, just sitting in it.

We might do some light looking around this fall some time.  I try and avoid the topic with her.

It's a bit amazing to me that a RAV 4 looks quite a bit larger than a GTI, and I guess it is.

X3. You will not like the X1. Trust me. My wife wanted one. She drove one. Then she drove the GLK (precursor to the GLC), and it was over.

X1 rides like a tin can.
