name one law that does that

Blue laws. Arbitrarily deciding *I* can't buy beer on Sunday because it's *your* sabbath.

In other news, I survived more pilates sessions.    My pitching coach has really taught me a LOT, and I'm still learning.

When a company offers you 0% interest for 60 months, you do it. Free money.

$92/month for 5 years for a forever mattress seems like a smart move to me.
Just reinforcing my point.

That's a lot of good stuff, but I don't see the word "evidence" anywhere.
Well thanks.  But you didn't ask for "evidence".

Quote
I would ask, though, what specifically in those texts you mentioned steered you towards believing?

So that's what I tried to address.  That's about as "specific" as I can get.  I'm not sure I have the capacity to condense or abridge either Lewis work mentioned, without doing it injustice.  And not sure I would, if I could.
Tell you what -- if you're really interested, I'll be happy to address specific topics that he covers.  Here's the table of contents of Mere Christianity, if that's helpful.  One thing -- if you want to continue this conversation, do me a favor and PM that you've responded.  This is a monster thread -- four or five pages added, since my last post.  Most of it stuff I don't have the slightest interest in.  So I won't know if you've responded, unless I get a notification.

Now, my experience is that these conversations tend to peter out at this point.  And -- all due respect -- but when people begin to demand "evidence" for the existence of God -- as in "empirical evidence" -- what they're really looking for are confirmations for their unbelief.  The evidence for God is necessarily inferential.  When it becomes "empirical", faith will no longer be needed.  Or possible.  Even the evidence for the existence of Jesus is inferential, as it is for nearly ALL figures from antiquity (the Egyptian Pharaohs would be exceptions.  We have their mummies).  We infer that Julius Caesar existed, because of historical writings.  Stuff named after him.  Etc.

Same with Jesus.  We infer that a story that features actual historical figures -- Pilate, Nicodemus, Joseph of Arimetha, Peter, Paul, John (the Baptist and the Apostle), Felix, Herod(s), Festus -- on and on -- has historical basis.  And the fact that He had followers who lived lives of toil and deprivation, and came to agonizingly bad ends, is further inference and indication of Jesus' existence.  People don't die for something they know to be untrue.

Let me know if any of the above provokes a response.

Otherwise:  my work here is done.

Y'all be good -- heah?

Oh -- one last thing.  A really good presentation of MC, in video form, if anyone wants to get a taste.

I don't think OAM was complaining ONLY about federal law. It's wrong whether done on the federal OR the state level.

Seems convenient that you're asking for an example, I provided one, and then you want to reframe and narrow the discussion to ONLY be federal. Nice dodge!

------------------

Edit: One more question. Does Texas bar sales of alcohol before noon on Monday through Saturday? If not, then you're still discriminating with a religious law barring sales before noon on Sunday. The only rationale I can think of is "well we shouldn't let people drink when they should be in church!"

You can buy beer and wine in Texas on Sunday, but not hard liquor.

Yes, the blue laws are clearly religious in origin, and they're antiquated and stupid.

Not sure why anyone would argue otherwise.

This is why I don't bother with him.  Unreachable.  Unreasonable.

I never considered local laws in this discussion cause of course people are going to govern locally in accprdance with their own preference which many times is based on religion

But the other side to that coin is its local and does not affect other areas of the country

This country was founded on certain freedoms such as speech and religion and local laws often reflect that

Thats why some parts of Texas are dry alcohol wise to this day

Its interesting that on a national level you cant give an example of this but only on a local level

@Volbrigade/oU Faith is the thing people cite when they lack a good reason.
We can just draw the line right there.

Is there any opinion a person could not hold, based on faith?
I could have faith that Asian people are better than Brazilian people.
I could have faith I won't be hit by a vehicle if I don't look both ways before crossing the road.
I could have faith Florida will go 12-0 this year.

So if you're a proponent of something that requires a lack of evidence, you're right, the conversation is over.  You're demonstrably unreasonable and I'm not a fan of a method which is an extremely poor way of finding the truth.  Faith is not a good way of finding the truth.  Might as well flip a coin.

The bible is true because the bible says it's true.
You need faith to believe in god and faith can be used to believe in anything.
This isn't hard.
It's silly.

You're advocating for something like if 60% of locals want to ban furnikayshun out of wedlock, they can, and it's cool.  Because it's local.  Fuck the other 40%, they don't count.

My issue was never with federal laws, that's something you brought up.  I was talking about the president praying about important decisions.  That scares the hell out of me.  And so do you.

Florida had a starting DE and our 3rd-string RB tear their knees, out for the year.
Fun.

People feel the way they do about various issues for many reasons one of which might be religion and if that scares you just find out if a candidate ever prays and dont vote for him
