I would ask, though, what specifically in those texts you mentioned steered you towards believing?
A penetrating intellect expressing unassailable logic and reason, with wit and humor and a warmth and generosity of spirit, utilizing an unsurpassed command of the English language that is a joy to consume.

TSL is a... well, diabolically accurate portrayal of man's perpetual spiritual and psychological condition.

MC is a collection of radio addresses delivered by Lewis during WWII, as the Nazi Blitz rained bombs on England.  He calmly and cheerfully, but forcefully, gave what I consider the most satisfying intellectual case for Christianity ever made.  One of the great minds of all time, skillfully crafting his argument to be understood by the common man.

There will be a long line in Heaven of former Whateverists who were enlightened by Lewis, waiting their turn to express their gratitude to this incomparable man.

I will be in it.

I think those instances are rare. Now, maybe the stories about Michigan players getting high or whatever before the App State game are true. Or the fictional example from "Varsity Blues" where they go out boozing the night before a game and then can't play b/c they're hung over. And I'd say if true, that would almost be the seminal example of what you're talking about. Because certain physical aspects would carry over.

And maybe there are instances where a coach thinks they can be on autopilot, so they prep for the next game instead of the one in front of them, and then the opposing coach starts throwing out things that are unexpected and he can't adjust. But does that really happen? I'm assuming Ryan Day isn't going to do that... He's going to argue to his team that you'd better focus on Northwestern b/c if you think about Michigan, NU is more than capable of beating you.

But I'd argue that absent something like that, once the pads go on, the bright lights shine, the fans cheer and the band plays... Those players are locked and loaded.
I mean, we’re talking about people in their early 20s who think they are invincible and assuming a lot of focus. Plus more than a few are head cases. (Some kids also react badly to a punch in the mouth)

I had a few friends who worked in the building with college teams. There’s a lot of nonsense and shenanigans.

Coaches are obviously more focused, but more than a few of them have their own foibles. Does it always come home to roost? No. I don’t think it would lead to a NW-OSU upset, But there are absolutely moments when kids get super high in their own hype and don’t do what they’re supposed to.

The Surprising Religious Diversity of America's 13 Colonies (history.com)

A bit rambling, to me, but it's a rambling subject.  Back in the day, "we" were all over the place, which is perhaps the main rason for the First Amendment.

How are you going to throw out Catholicism like that?!?
Next you'll be saying a wafer cracker thing isn't the literal flesh of Jesus!
It isn't, but it is blessed and is symbolic.

As for Jesus, we don't even know if he actually existed.  He could easily have been a compilation of people from that time or from that time's history.  The bible authors offer zero firsthand accounts of him.

I wouldn't think that possible, is it?  Something about proving a negative (which can be done in some cases).

Actually,  very little is subject to real "proof" in life.  Descartes simplified it down to one thing.  Folks generally accept the physical Laws of Nature as proven, but there is some debate over parts of them.  Newton's Law of Gravitation could be incomplete, maybe there is an additional term we don't yet know that applies at long range.

If I rephrase it as people need this lie and if you remove the lie they need.....what?  A replacement for the lie?  How about the truth?!?
Yes. The truth.

Act like I've spent my entire live believing in God, and that's just been shattered. I've now accepted that when I die, it's all over. By the time my grandkids pass away, I'll be completely unremembered and nothing I do in my life, good or bad, is of any importance whatsoever, in the grand scheme of things.

What "truth" do you have that replaces existential despair?

Think trillion dollar machines to remove CO2 and you might be close.

Someone out there needs to read up on Mr. Entropy.

One of my favorite equations is the Gibbs equation:

 ΔG = ΔH − TΔS.

It says a lot about how things work, or don't.  The S of course is Entropy.
