I'll give you 1 guess why crime increases in the ever-shrinking bad areas of big cities.
GENTRIFICATION!
That's talking in circles.

Gentrification is slowing. People are leaving big cities behind in favor of suburbs. Yes, even those who are not rich.

Supply and demand. If the market doesn't support those rents, then they'll have low occupancy. If they are at full or near full occupancy at those rents, the rents are fair market value.

Remember, people have options. Some of those options might not be great, i.e. living farther away from a city and commuting because you can't afford to live closer. Some of those options might be disruptive, such as leaving where you live for another state where cost of living is lower (as the Texans and Floridians here keep bragging about).

But you know what DOESN'T work? Limiting the amount of rent that can be charged to below-market rates. Because that reduces the economic return on investing in what will actually improve the affordability, which is BUILDING MORE HOUSING STOCK.

If you disincentivize building new housing stock, don't be shocked when demand (which keeps rising) and supply (which you're restricting) get out of whack and prices go up.
Yeah, I always wondered why Somalis don't just move.
Just move.  You literally have 37 cents in your bank account?  Just move.
Oh, it costs money to move?
Hell, I'll move you out further where it's cheaper.  You're welcome.
Oh, you don't have a car?
Shit, uh, take the bus?
Oh, we moved you out too far and public transporation doesn't come out here?
Er....

You cited one post of homeless numbers, which are universally known to be undercounted.
You're my hero.
Maybe they're undercounted. But by whatever methodology they're using, they're not increasing:

Can you think of a sad reason homeless numbers aren't increasing?

Around here, gentrification is blasting ahead, and folks are moving back into the city.  The racial balance is shifting as well.  A new large park opened up on the west side and is attracting all sorts of development now.  That area had been semi-industrial and lightly populated for being in a city, and now it's going crazy, mostly new developments more than fixing up houses.

Homelessness has increased 25% in AZ since 2020.
I guess my eyes see the worst of it.

I just want to note this pushback I'm getting from the echo chamber.

You guys are right.  It's fine.  People driven to homelessness will just bend over and take it forever.  It's their fault.  Perpetual growth is possible.

Is it not clear to everyone here that the greed of the few is going to make Karl Marx correct?

I don't want it, but what other result is there?

Why Arizona's homelessness crisis is among the worst in U.S. (azcentral.com)
Why Arizona's homelessness crisis is among the worst in U.S. (azcentral.com)

Homelessness across the country increased by less than 1% between 2020 and 2022, the report showed. Yet Arizona saw a 23% jump in its homeless population.
Of the more than 13,000 people experiencing homelessness in Arizona, most were unsheltered, meaning they were living on the street, in a car or in another place not meant for sleeping.
Arizona was one of just four states where more than two-thirds of unaccompanied youth under age 25 did not have a place to sleep.

Impressions and numbers in AZ may be bad, but they are not aligned with the national trend.

And as long as those who suffer most during these panics and crises aren't you, then it's fine.

I surmise his simple point didn't make it into OAM's level of consciousness, or comprehension.

It's not at all fine to me that I see folks suffering.  I try and do my part to ameliorate that.

Florida is not affordable in most places.
