Well the people that lack the ability or willingness to work the problem with a job or multiple jobs may lay around surviving and bicker amongst themselves.  That's your normal homeless population growing as it is now.
But once you have industrious, motivated people unable to secure housing......they're not going to simply nap all day and bicker among themselves.  People with jobs are priced out of even renting crap apartments and that will not stand for long.
.
50 years ago we had a middle class with 1 income and 2 kids per family.....that's a sick joke today, thanks to the 1%ers getting better and better at extracting as much money as possible from their worker bees.

What percentage would that be?  What is it today?
I don't know.
Not much higher than it is today.
.
Let's find out together, in real time!

Or, you know, if such a high % of the population can't afford to buy or rent a place to live start burning shit down.
Easy there, Comrade.

Is it not clear to everyone here that the greed of the few is going to make Karl Marx correct?
.
I don't want it, but what other result is there?

Our economic system is based on greed.  So is every other economic system.  It's a human trait,  and it isn't worse today than in the past.

But if we don't know the current percentage who can't afford an apt, and we don't know what it would be to cause folks to burn things down, we don't know enough to discuss that possibility.

Sheltered homelessness declined over the past decade but unsheltered homelessness rose.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) counted around 582,000 Americans experiencing homelessness in 2022. That’s about 18 per 10,000 people in the US, up about 2,000 people from 2020.

Not much of a trend at this point.

As it relates to the housing market, the greed of who?

It's not Warren Buffett, or Elon Musk, or Jeff Bezos that are making housing expensive.

Uh, you're right.....1%ers make $400K+, no need to cite those guys.
No private entity builds new affordable housing, which is what is needed.  Every new property is luxury housing.
Any affordable housing is handcuffed to the government.

1%ers aren't buying more than 1% of the housing, are they?

And everyone's for affordable housing. As long as it's "somewhere else". Try to zone existing spaces to allow more density, and (non-1%er) residents will fight tooth and nail.

https://www.npr.org/2023/02/11/1155094278/states-cities-end-single-family-zoning-housing-affordable

There are reasons we don't have enough housing, nor enough affordable housing. But I think you're pointing in the wrong direction.

(Edit: Actually I'm sure the 1%ers are buying more than 1% of the housing, given investing in rental properties, second/vacation homes, and the fact that only 65% of the US own homes. So 1%ers would be actually higher than 1% of property owners.)

Exactly. I'm doing some of them now. It's maddening what these people say at public meetings. And it's not like they live in Newport. More like Compton.

Yeah, they but a ton of housing, some of which is to redevelop existing affordable housing into something expensive and pretty.
