Exactly.

And as for #46, the standard question applies.

Are you better off today than you were 2.5 years ago?

I know lots and lots of people on fixed incomes who are NOT better off, and it has a whole lot to do with #46 and the irresponsible policies.

The matter of poor build quality could be related to one maker.  The other issues are pretty much the same for everyone at this point.  My guess is 5-7 years to reach near parity.
yup, I'm guessing EVs will improve noticeably in the next 5-10 years

maybe I'll be interested then
I doubt it

I would surmise most "regular folks" are worse off, though it's not showing up in consumer spending, yet, I think because credit card debt is rising.  Inflation bites middle and lower classes harder.  I'm not upper class of course, but I can adjust my spending pretty easily because a lot of it is discretionary.  I personally am better off though mostly because of the stock market.

Damn, some of you are anti-progress no matter what.  It's nuts.
I don't consider myself anti-progress. I've said numerous times that as of my last car purchase (2017), there were no EVs that met my needs at my price range and there was not a robust enough EV infrastructure to support the EVs on the road. I've also said that at my likely next purchase (2027ish?) my needs will have changed (one kid off to college and another soon to be), and both EV infrastructure has improved and there will be many more EV options for purchase at that time. *And* there might be a more robust used market at that time that isn't really mature yet. So I may go for one.

The issue when you start talking about Tesla, however, is that the Tesla Model 3 is *not* a luxury sedan. Tesla fans like to compare it to the BMW 3-series, Mercedes something (I don't know their lineup), Audi A4, etc. But although it's priced like them, it's not actually built as nicely.

I'm for progress if it makes sense. EV's, to me, are not progress. They could get there, but they are not.

It all depends how you define progress. And whether you consider "not burning gasoline" as progress in its own right.

I think from a performance standpoint, EV can be a pretty significant progress. I also think from a maintenance standpoint, an EV powertrain can be pretty significant progress. And charging at home and nearly never needing to visit a gas station is progress and a quality of life improvement for many.

But I think that RIGHT NOW the cost of batteries limits EVs to the upper end of the market. Very few BEVs are available at the bottom end of the market, pretty much just the Bolt and Leaf. And outside of Tesla, most EV makers are still going through the learning curve of bringing them to market, so how trustworthy some of these models are is questionable.

But I do think there are some advantages to the BEV powertrain relative to ICEV once the economics pencil out.

Better off is a weird measure.

If you graduated with a masters degree three years ago, and found a nice high-paying job not long after that, of course you’re going to be better off.

Can you afford groceries? Can you afford fuel for your car? Can you afford to upgrade your house and move to the next level? Are you happy with what your child is learning in school? Do you feel you have the ability to influence that? Are you free to speak your mind and your opinion about political issues or social issues? Do you feel like our military is improving and can defend the country if necessary? Do you feel the government is focused on spending money on the right things? Do you feel like government is more invasive in your life or less invasive? Do you feel like people are getting along better or is the country more polarized than it was? Do you feel like our country has improved his standing in the world as far as manufacturing and education?

I feel like the answer to every single one of those questions is not positive.
Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.

Hopped on the scale this morning, and at 258.8 it's the second day in a row I've been under 260. Maybe I'm breaking through the plateau in that 260-263 range that I've been in for months.

I've definitely been burning some fat though with all the strength work. Even though my weight hasn't changed, my body sure looks different...

if you're only driving enough to charge at home over night, you're not visiting the gas station very often. once a week or every two weeks for 5-10 minutes
visiting the gas station is relatively painless today with pay at the pump.  Only takes a few minutes and w/o human interaction.

but, I agree.  Charging in the garage is more convenient than visiting the gas pump

With most modern EVs having 250+ mile ranges, and with installing a Level 2 charger, you can do a LOT of daily driving and still be able to charge overnight at home. Given most people only charge to 80% unless prepping for a road trip, that gives you 200 mi/day.

If you're the type of person who has to eat some miles on sales calls visiting customers, or has a hellish commute, you could EASILY be the type of driver that has to fill up multiple times a week, and have that go to zero times a week with a BEV.

I personally don't find filling my gas tank to be a problem. But I know a lot of women find it, well, a little dirty, and would prefer to avoid it. My wife fills her car often as she drives more than I do, and is not some delicate flower that's incapable of doing it. But if we're in my wife's car together and it needs to be filled, I take over those duties and she's always grateful that I do. And this is in temperate Southern California, where we rarely need to deal with rain, and never need to deal with freezing temps. I remember filling my tank in cold Chicago winters, and would prefer not to do that if I didn't have to lol.

I think "nearly never visiting a gas station" is one of the things that people don't appreciate about EVs until they own one, at least that's what I've heard from talking to EV owners.

if I were in charge of a hotel chain.......

I'd install chargers for the road warriors.
Perhaps for a small fee at first to help pay for the initial cost

there is a new Hilton in downtown Des Moines with 2 chargers out front
