I had a professor that I'm pretty sure was a communist for one of my philosophy electives: Classic and Contemporary Marxism.

In retrospect, I might have biased the entire class against me on the first day when I said I was taking the class to better understand Marxism in order to argue more effectively against it.

Oops.

This is at Purdue? Openly pushing Marxism?

Teaching Marxism wouldn't necessarily be Marxist, any more than learning about Napoleon is well, napoleonic.  I read a fair bit about Hitler back when.

It was a 300-level elective, in the philosophy dept. Not required for gen-ed for any major, and not required (AFAIK) for a degree in Philosophy.

So I wouldn't necessarily say Purdue was pushing anything.

I minored in philosophy, so I needed 15 credit hours total to satisfy the minor, and I thought it might be somewhat interesting.

One takeaway from the class: most contemporary folks who profess that they're Marxists don't know squat about Marxism lol :57:

What would you say is one of the most misunderstood things about it?

I'm pretty sure that what I think of as Marxism is probably wrong because I've only picked it up by context through contemporary discussions of it.  So I do my best not to talk about Marxism at all. :)

I read Marx's manifesto for the same reason.

Understanding other ideologies is a vastly underappreciated undertaking.

I've considered reading Hitler's Mein Kampf for the same reason but from what I've heard, it is pointless.

Marx's Communist Manifesto is a fairly succinct ideological statement. Hitler's book is MUCH longer with (as I understand it), much of it devoted to Hitler's retelling of basically all of history into antisemitic terms. Ie, you don't really need to read it to understand him, you just need to understand that he blamed "the jews" for more-or-less everything.

Entirely true. I've read it. You don't need to.

Something I've really never understood is the Jewish people, and I know many and call them friends.

In conversation, for example...

Hi, I'm Marla, and I'm Jewish.

Me: Cool. I'm a Catholic from Chicago. Where are you from?

Her: I'm Jewish.

Obviously, that's over-simplifying things.

Can anyone shed light on this? It's almost (or is??) as if Jewish is a nationality.

I started reading Mein Kampf a while back, it's basically unreadable, very disjointed and erratic.  He didn't blame everything on Jews though.  He blamed a lot of folks for Germany's downfall.

Being Jewish is more a strong heritage than a religion.  I knew a guy at work who said he attended a Jewish Temple for atheists.

The Jews have been tromped on throughout history and have somehow maintained a consciousness of "Jewishness"

Well, first, it sounds like the person you were talking to was a weirdo.

Second, it is to a degree a heritage, people, something like that. I suppose the best comp would be Irish-Catholic or German-Lutheran. It’s sort of a fusion of national ancestry and some degree of religious history/community during your upbringing.

How so?

Most Jews don't identify this way. There are Jews all over the world, and most of them identify as "Jewish" rather than the country they are in.

It is good to know that I'm a German-Catholic from Chicago, living in Florida. So, Florida-Catholic I guess.
