While I agree in one sense, I think a college degree in anything is often a "foot in the door" for many jobs that simply require one, in anything.  Someone told me to be a State Farm salesman you had to have a degree, for example.  My daughter majored in English and French and now is a software engineer.  And some get a degree in say polysci and go to law school and become highly successful injury lawyers making tens of thousands a year.

Well, in an update to the dryer saga, the motor didn't fix it. I thought it did for a bit, and then it wouldn't turn on (although wouldn't trip the breaker). Between toggling the breaker myself (and then the motor turning on--for a moment), I ended up replacing the breaker this morning. No difference. Means that there's probably some gremlin in the control board or power distribution board. The costs of those subcomponents are high enough I don't want to mess with replacing them.

So a new dryer is on the way, to be delivered Thursday.

Lasted 7 years. And only because I managed to revive it from the dead 3 other times. Not impressed what those quality metrics...

Our dryer "computer" would have cost $420.  The new ones are LGs.  They were $866 each on sale.

They’re always talking about going green, energy efficiency, but they never consider how much energy it wastes to have engineered obsolescence in appliances that last less than 10 years when they could very easily make them last for 20 or more. You know, like we had from the 1950’s-1990’s.

No dryer back then had a computer obviously.  They were ultra simple devices one could repair on one's own with a bit of skill.  There wasn't much to break, and whatever might break could be fixed.  Our new set is ultra complicated.  And in the 1950s I think most folks used solar energy to dry their clothes ...

Samsung.
Interesting. We had Samsung for 12 years and as far as I know they never needed anything. We left them in Illinois when we moved and bought Samsung for Florida. No issues.
