On a long-enough timeline, a free market yields one monopoly owning everything.  There's your efficiency.
Even my most staunch naysayer knows that's a bad thing.
Monopolies always have been and will be issues in the free market. But, given enough time and bureaucratic bloat and in fighting, in the long term monopolies self destruct. Rail roads, telecoms, search engines. Hell, isn’t the govt a monopoly ?

I guess we should try out city-states!

Prove it. And show your work.

Note: the movie WALL-E is not admissible as evidence.

Graph the number of companies earning the top 90% of any industry's wealth from any length of time in the past to now.  The further back you go, there are multitudes more.
Hell, go to a grocery store in 1985 and today.  Go to the chip aisle.  At first glace, it looks like the same number of chip bags, maybe even similar variety of chip types.  In 1985, a couple of dozen companies made those chips.  Today, maybe 3 do.

Fighting me on this is silly.  It's a fact.  Sorry if it's not happening fast enough for you.  You sound like someone wary of evolution because a monkey doesn't turn into a human before your very eyes.

Anyone paying attention to this coronation stuff going on in the UK?
One of my cousins is obsessed with it.  Her and her husband woke up early and made a bunch of English food to watch.  My uncle was in the USAFA and they were stationed in England when she was young.
I'll never understand having a royal family with no actual power.
.
And we think our gov't wastes tax dollars.......

You sound like a monkey compared to him. As usual/ you aren’t just wrong- you are 180 degrees from reality.
I just came from the grocery store and was noticing so many new start up companies having success in the chip aisle.

We simply don't share the same reality.
Go back to the same store in 10 years and you'll see all-new start ups looking successful, while the big corporations will own more of the total market.
.
I'm going to say it's not stupidity, so it's got to be willful ignorance.  Why are you guys such fanboys of the biggest corporations?  They fuck over the "little guy" endlessly.  You probably lament the end of small-town America in one breath and buy more stock in Walmart with your next.

You'll need something along these lines, in order to achieve that particular wine pairing.

2000: Frito Lay (the largest producer) held 68% market share in the US chip market:

2020: Frito Lay's market share had dropped to just under 60%:

"Private label" as a category gained 1.2% share. Cape Cod grew from 1.4% to 3.8%, at almost 10x revenue growth in 20 years. Utz gained 1% share. Kettle wasn't even on the list in 2000 and grew to almost 3% share.

Admittedly, some of these brands (such as Kettle) are subsidiaries of larger companies (Campbell soup in that case). But they were acquired as brands BECAUSE they were successful.

In your view of history Frito Lay just owns everything, but they've spent the last 20 years losing market share.
