Sure, someone puts up a 30 story apt building with 300 units, 20 of which are AH.  You can guess who pays for it.

The ones I do in Illinois are subsidized by the State (its taxpayers).

Along partisan lines: Our two-party split is tearing the nation apart | The Hill

Yup.  I don't see a solution.
The media is complicit in all of this. It's toxic all across the board.

A good start would be to stop violence in the name of certain "causes".

Until we stop feeding on seeing the world in ugly terms, we’ll feel this sort of divided. Media is just a reflection of what “we” want.

We need to figure out a solution for our large city shopping districts.  Companies are rightfully pulling out, but with them goes a large tax base.  With more workers going remote, office leasing is way down too

https://twitter.com/mgsiegler/status/1653559540120702977?t=844tTQGFswfiHcBM946HvQ&s=19
Setting aside the crime element, do we really want our shopping there?

Like this is an honest question from a person with a limited interest in shopping. Do you want to go to a place with bad parking to shop? (You might want to go nowhere with bad parking, and that’s another matter)

I can see the appeal of living somewhere a bit more dense. I can see the office value, assuming someone builds the parking for me. But I’ve spent a fair amount of time in SF, and there’s not part of me that thinks, “I want to deal with that traffic and pay through the nose to park and then do that kind of shopping.” And I have a high-ish tolerance for fighting through bad parking.

I guess I’m arguing for people who live in those downtowns, which are popular these days, to not have easy access to that kind of shopping, but I’m kinda whatever there.

Which is why we don't tune in very often, except for our local* news.

On Fox, it's Baier or nothing for us, and mostly nothing. Nothing on the other channels compels me to watch as they all opinion (and divisive). At least with Baier we can get some real news (and only a smattering of opinion when there is a guest sometimes).

Nah.    I want facts and truth.  I can’t stand to watch or listen to media- exactly none of it is what I want.

of course I know you are being fashionable. It’s the “ thing” now to see a story that makes you feel horrible, only to be told that it is your own fault for feeling that way.  Like the guy in Texas who murdered a whole family, including an 8 year old, execution style.  He had been deported multiple times.  Those are the facts.

It’s my fault - in your theory- to be frustrated by that because in your theory- that’s what I want to hear.

needless to say- respectfully-  BS.
Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.

"you and I"

are much different than "we"

You and I don't drive ratings

"we" drive ratings

I find the various business channels have less fluff and opinion, other than what stock to buy etc. (which I ignore).

I've talked about this a lot, but I think this is just technology and the tribal human brain cooperating in a symbiotic relationship to destroy any sense of a cohesive society.

In 1970, everyone had three channels to get the news. Maybe the news was slanted one way or the other, but the entire country lived in the same reality, with the same facts. When you disagreed with your neighbor, you had different opinions and perhaps different analysis, but you both had access to the same prism within which to view the world, because they were the same.

In 2023, everyone has so many options to get the news that they may never even see the same prism as their neighbor. It's beyond the addition of cable news. It's YouTube and podcasts and social media algorithms. As I've said before, WAY too many people in our society construct a nice, comfortable cocoon of confirmation bias around themselves, and actively shun anything beyond it that might make them feel icky.

I know some people disagree with me, but I truly believe that it has led to people from "the other sides" living in completely different subjective realities.

It would be like if we were both watching a documentary on the Rwandan Civil War, in the native language of Kinyarwanda. Because neither of us speak it, we have subtitles. But you're fed subtitles that make the Hutus out to be heroes and the Tutsis out to be villains, and I am fed subtitles with the exact opposite. And then we discuss the film and you think I must be a monster for supporting the Tutsis, and I think you must be an imbecile for supporting the Hutus.

That's the world in which we live. We can't even begin to understand "the other side" because they live in a reality that we don't even experience. So we can't fathom how they could see everything we see and then believe something other than we believe; they must either be evil or stupid. We don't even consider that they DON'T see everything we see, and we DON'T see everything they see, because we've each constructed our subjective experience of reality to filter each other's viewpoints out.

Avoiding confirmation bias is hard, like exercise, and that's why so few people do it. Most don't even know what it is or that it's a problem.

Good news often gets ignored.  For example, we have this group called Midtown Alliance here, they do architectural reviews and planning studies and have various events.  Today they had "free lunch" and a meet and greet at a small park they recently redid.  We spoke with their President at some length.  They really are going a lot of good things sort of hidden from view.  Here is a photo:

Below is a small dog park they added to this parklet.  It helped that the weather was spectacular.  One thing they do is taking small spaces like this one and making parklets.  They also have "Midtown Blue" which is a local police force in effect in addition to APD.  They really add to the livability of this area.

One can read about the newspapers in the 19th century and how rabidly partisan they were then.

So, on the bad news front ...

Atlanta Police investigating an active shooter at a building in Midtown | CNN

I got three alerts to avoid the area.  This is about a mile away.
