Under the catagory of the stupidest thing I ever did

One night in my Jr year at UT I and three of my buds decided we were going to drive to Mexico

Nuevo Laredo was the destination and was 240 miles in my volkswagen bug

So us 4 guys piled in the bug and off we went

When we got to the border we were waved through with no hassle

After sitting in a bar for 3 hours we decided to go back to Austin

It never dawned on me how suspicious this looked to customs

When we got to the check point we were told to park off to the side which I did

They asked us to get out of the car and a German Shepherd proceeded to sniff all four of us from head to toe

They then told us to have a seat while the dog and 3 guys proceeded to search the bug

This scared the holly crap out of me

I knew we didnt have any drugs or alcohol but you just never know if they might plant something

finally the head guy comes over and says

you drove all the way from Austin stay a few hours and you cross back over with nothing

I said yes sir

He looks at me and says youre free to go

which we did very quickly

I have similar story. In 1982, I was working a construction job in San Antonio at Randolph AFB.

A couple of buddies and I decided that we would drive to Del Rio Texas and cross into Mexico for a day trip. We were all 18 -19 years old and didn't think much of it.

We borrowed a friends fairly new car (small car, don't remember make and model), drove to the border and crossed with no issue. Instead of drinking, we just went around to the local shops. My friend who was 19 at the time, bought a bottle of Mescal and the rest of us bought some stupid crap, nothing illegal. We did go into a couple of bars and have a couple of drinks, but no where near enough to get drunk.

Coming back across the border, my friend declared his bottle of Mescal and because he as of legal age, he simply paid the duty on it. However, like your story, they asked us to park and get out of the car. Then a couple of officers began to search the car. Like you, we were not really concerned because we didn't do drugs and never worried they would find anything.

When the officers were done, they simply gave us the keys and said we were free to go.

When we returned and returned the car to the guy who let us use it, I told him about getting searched at the border. His face went flush and he looked nervous. I asked why the worry and he immediately went to the car. He opened up the drivers door, reached inside a cloth pocket on the door and pulled out a joint. At that point, I almost panicked and asked why he had that in there and didn't tell me. He said that he thought we would park on the US side and walk across the bridge.

The moral of the story, don't drive a car that is not yours, across the border. LOL Also, pick better friends.

My friend bought some apples at Safeway on the way down to Mexico.  We literally went there for an hour, within 100 yards of the border.
On the way back, they made him throw away the apples, even though he had a receipt.
Maybe they care more about produce than drugs!

The Ag inspectors are pretty severe about such things for obvious reasons.

While we are confessing to the stupidity of our youth as it relates to border crossings…

Living in Metro Detroit in the 70s and 80s- the “ thing” to do on a weekend was to make the quick trip into Windsor Canada- where the legal drinking age was 18 ( versus 21 )

It was common to cross the tunnel or bridge without much trouble- so long as you were polite and respectful to the Border Crossing staff.

One particular Friday evening, in my car I grabbed two buddies and we were headed there. My one friend had a small pouch of weed and was rolling a joint in the backseat. I vehemently objected to it for obvious reasons, plus I really didn’t care for it myself as it always made me paranoid and hungry lol

He assured me he had done it dozens of times and we would be fine.

Of course they asked us to pull to the side, brought the German Shepherd dog out and he proceeded to find a seed on the backseat floor.

Making matters worse my friend had given me the rolled joint to put in my cigarette package. ( yes- I smoked back then).

Into separate cells  we went. They begin conducting a strip search and full cavity check if you get my meaning.   I was freaking out because back then the penalty was very severe. I almost blurted out “OK you got me“. But for some reason I kept my mouth shut and when he was done searching me he picked up my cigarette pack held it up at an angle shook it around, set it back down and said OK get dressed you’re free to go!  He somehow didn’t see it

Meanwhile my idiot friend had the small bag of weed down in his underwear. But I did not realize at the time was that in his cell he climbed on the chair and stuffed the weed in the ceiling vent fan.

When they asked him to remove his clothes he refused so they brought in the RCMP. ( Royal Canadian mounted police).  Those guys don’t fuck around. I could see through the window they just grabbed him in a chokehold and quickly made him unconscious. They forcibly removed his clothes and searched him.

He had done the whole thing to distract them and apparently it worked because when he came to they told him to get the hell out of here.

And to make matters worse, when we got back over on the US side he stopped at a cell phone, called the border patrol, and told them to go look in the exhaust fan. He laughed at them and then hung up

Moral of the story:   Like the Grinch said, “ I’m a idiot “.  And my friends were idiots.
Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.

My bet is "we" could go on for days about stuff we did when we were "19" we wouldn't do today.

A few of mine scare me today.

SpaceX Starship orbital launch live updates (cnbc.com)

It exploded midflight.  Hopefully they can learn from that and fix it.

The Starship rocket suffered a mid-flight failure roughly 4 minutes after its historic launch. The company said in a tweet it experienced a “rapid unscheduled disassembly,” indicating the rocket was destroyed. As a reminder, no crew were on board.
