Hard to really know how much difference a secure border would make with the drug flow but if we could save just one life it would be worth it
Well, I've heard a lot of people say that we need to secure the border, but so far I haven't exactly heard a definition of exactly what that means.

If a secure border is that every single car coming across legally is searched extensively for 2 hours, that would be needlessly intrusive on law-abiding people, would require such extensive manpower as to be prohibitive, and would destroy trade and economic activity that is enabled by reasonably-efficient border crossings.

So there has to be a balance.

Traffic deaths would be tremendously curtailed if we made the national speed limit 5 mph, but we don't do that. Because it's ridiculous and not worth it, even though it would save tens of thousands of lives every year.

most of us would simply like a balance

there doesn't seem to be a balance currently

I'm not sure I buy that. People see things that they don't like and the desired balance is always "less". But it's entirely possible there's already a balance.

I'm reminded of meeting with the caterer in preparation for the reception with my now ex-wife. My soon to be MIL was worried that if we had an open bar, people would take advantage and get hammered.

The caterer basically said that open bar or cash bar, 20% of the guests wouldn't drink. Open bar or cash bar, 60% of the guests would have an appropriate amount of alcohol. Open bar or cash bar, 20% would get drunk. It seems that there are more intrinsic factors in behavior than whether folks have to pay for their drinks.

The truth is that a certain percentage of people like getting f&@^#d up, whether it's alcohol, or drugs, or whatever. That demand will NEVER go away completely. And they'll find a way to get what they want. We can't even keep drugs out of prisons. You think "border security" is going to keep them out of the country? Some of these drugs, anyone with a chemistry set can produce. Are we going to outlaw chemistry? (Or tightly regulate it, like Texas?) Doesn't seem to be stopping drugs.

In fact, everything that we've done to stop heroin has caused the much more dangerous--and much easier to conceal--fentanyl to proliferate.

"Securing the border" isn't going to change that.

right now the drug cartels have a free reign

Im not suggesting we could completely rub it out but we could damn sure make it harder to get drugs into this country

In short the drug cartels feel little heat from anyone

we should change that

you're correct

even an air tight southern border won't stop drug problems in the US

but, border security measures that deter and slow down the worst illegal crap coming across the border would help

if you simply look at the total number of illegals entering today and in the past year compared to the previous decade, there doesn't seem to be much deterrent and it's easy to imagine the worst illegal crap is getting more common

Has anything changed vis a vis coming through legal check points?  If most of the drugs come through that way ...

I've done it once on the ground, from Canada, it was a one hour wait.  They didn't search the car or anything, but there was a line of cars to get in.  I've of course done it many times flying.

If I can put fentanyl packs inside my tires, for example, and get through the legal border crossing, I'm not going to bother crossing elsewhere.

How? Do you have concrete steps that would be taken? That would be effective?

Ok, so what do we do? Increase searches of incoming vehicles from 1 in 100 to 3 in 100?

Just curious. Why do you keep talking about vehicles. All of the data suggests that the overwhelming majority of illegal border crossings including those who make it in those who are apprehended are on foot and not at ports of entry.

I would get Mexico on board with drug enforcement by threatening to cut commerce

Increase border enforcement personnel

reduce the flow of illegals by sending them back to their country
word would get out and there would be fewer attempts

quit doing catch and release

random checks on all traffic

We're discussing how fentanyl gets into the US, not illegals.
