More deaths per year from fentanyl ODs than deaths suffered in WW2.  And nothing but political BS out of DC in response
Based on some quick research, I don’t think that is numerically correct.

U.S. opioid crisis hit a deadly peak in 2022 but also perhaps a turning point : NPR

She's been addicted to opioids for 18 years and prefers heroin, but says fentanyl is now the only drug street dealers are offering.

I had not realized that fentanyl has, according to this, largely replaced heroin et al. on the street.

Should we make it legal and try and control distribution?

The A-10’s most fearsome weapon is its gigantic GAU-8 Avenger 30mm cannon. It has 7 barrels and fires aluminum shells crossed with depleted uranium at either 2,100 or 4,200 rounds per minute, which can precisely strike within an area of 30 feet at a range of 6,000 feet. Its magazine has a capacity of 1,174 rounds, meaning it can continuously fire with intensity for 18.06 seconds.

since it's 50 times more potent than heroin, maybe a dangerous proposition

Carfentanil is a synthetic opioid approximately 10,000 times more potent than morphine and 100 times
more potent than fentanyl.
The presence of carfentanil in illicit U.S. drug markets is cause for concern, as
the relative strength of this drug could lead to an increase in overdoses and overdose-related deaths, even among opioid-tolerant users.

Sure, but maybe it's better if folks get it in a controlled dose from a licensed outlet at a price that undercuts the mob ... and then proceeds go to drug rehab programs.

Dunno.  Seems like it is widely available now.

a controlled dose isn't much
On the left, a lethal dose of heroin; on the right, a lethal dose of fentanyl.

Absolutely not. We need to cut off the supply.

I think it is, based on the charts posted above and the 2022 numbers given in a post below it.

shit is extremely deadly

Carfentanil, or 4-carbomethosfentanyl (brand name Widnil), was developed in China in 1974, and carries the DEA Schedule II classification. Its only legitimate use is as a veterinary sedative for very large animals.

Carfentanil is a white powdery substance that impacts the central nervous system, dramatically slowing the respiratory and nervous systems. It is also available in tablet form. Just 2mg of this deadly drug, about the weight of 35 grains of salt, can cause death in humans, who usually are not aware that they have ingested it.
