Because while speech is free, amplifying it costs money. 

If you want to buy airtime to show your speech on television in between programming, you need money. Whether that speech is advertising Coca-Cola or putting out a message saying "Candidate B sucks."

It's why it's constitutional to have limits on actual campaign contributions to a candidate (money != speech), but it's unconstitutional to limit contributions to a PAC that intends to buy airtime to distribute ads (money = speech).

don't allow $$$ to be given to a politician

At a point, there’s just a workaround. 

I can’t give to candidate A, but I can buy ads saying his opponent will burn down America. (And shoot, maybe I hire a former advisor to help run things).

You're not giving it to a politician. You're giving it to a PAC. Then they produce the ads and buy the airtime.

I've contributed to PACs in the past

the issue is with lobbyists buying votes  for their cause by shoveling money or gifts to politicians

Lobbyists (and I guess PACs, etc) bastardize the problem from being "what is the best for the greatest number of people" to being "how much money does it take to make the choice I want you to."
