I don't think one could write a law out lawing or limiting lobbying without infringing the free speech rights of an individual.

Maybe that's why we've had lobbying around since at least the Civil War and no such law has been passed.
It's actually written into the dang amendment.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

The issues with lamenting lobbying is that "lobbying" isn't a singular or even particularly narrow act. So it's hard to nail down.

More financial oversight is needed.

Yeah, it's the "B", STOL, which means our small carriers now have pretty decent fighter/attack assets.

so it's too hard
we know it's not OK, but it's too hard, so just allow it.

We know it’s not ideal. But we don’t have even close to a good mechanism to police it without actively capping what are pretty fundamental rights. And in the end we often air on the side of rights and freedom, hopefully.

Like, I’m not particularly in favor of gobs of money going into messaging around politicians. But if people have the ability to message, which is speech, they’ll probably find a way to do it.

capping the size of the gob would be a great place to start
not easy to track, but an attempt could be made and a stiff penalty if caught

I suspect everyone here hates negatives ads, most of which come from PACs these days.  "Don't vote for X, he hates babies and baseball."

I don't see a viable mechanism for limiting their "gobs" of money, much as I'd love to do it.

And I'd highlight that these PACs and their negative ads actually are a completely different thing than lobbying.
