Cincy, I don't think you're being objective.  In any event, you're posting the same thing over and over again.  We got it.

You're confusing people who think the U.S. is perfect with people who are willing to claim it aloud.
Can you offer an example of such a person?

Aside from whatever is in your own head?

Still chilly here, I guess over most of the US relatively.  It's actually nice outside in the afternoon, little wind and full sun.  The trees and flowers seem to come out early and this might impact our fruit production, which is not good.  We usually get some great peaches and apples at our local farmer's market.

Anybody want to tackle this whole San Francisco slavery reparations deal?  Because I’m throughly confused.

Because-They passed some sort of resolution to pay $5 million per person. But is this just for blacks living in the city?  And most importantly, I’m fairly certain SF and California did not allow slavery. Im not even sure when they became a state, but I don’t recall them having any involvement in the civil war or any of the major movements of the day.

The whole thing is just so weird, even by California standards.

SF hasn't passed anything, they have a committee making some recommendations (California has the same on a state level).  I think if we here appointed a committee to hand out say $1 MILLION dollars to every poster here, said committee would forward that recommendation.  I suspect the PTBs would say "Thanks, we'll consider it ..." (or not), and that would be that.

San Francisco proposes reparations, includes $5 million for eligible Black people | PBS NewsHour

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A controversial draft reparations proposal that includes a $5 million lump-sum payment for each eligible Black person could make San Francisco the first major U.S. city to fund reparations, though it faces steep financial headwinds and blistering criticism from conservatives.

Tuesday’s meeting of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors will include a presentation by San Francisco’s African American Reparations Advisory Committee, which released its draft report in December. The $5 million-per-person payment is among more than 100 recommendations ranging from offering grants to buy and maintain homes to exempting Black businesses from paying taxes.

I'm assuming he's not even wanting there to BE senators maybe?
Not sure how you got that out of wanting to repeal the 17th Amendment, which I believe to be the best thing that we could do in this country.

No, you didn't. Everyone would have more of a say - if they wanted to, of course.

As for me, I was very active with my former state rep in Illinois, and I'm working on the new one in Florida. So yes, I'd have more of a say.

Just as you would, if you had a relationship with your local rep.

That's a choice we all make. You either get involved, or you don't.

And, if you don't, stop bitching. Pretty simple, yes?

I'm going to stay uninvolved, but it will not diminish my bitching at all.

(My wife got on a committee here to design an upgrade for our community deck space.  They put in quite a bit of work, and the HOA Board ignored it all, entirely, and did their own thing.  I had warned my wife of that possibility.  She wasn't overly upset because she had stopped going to their meetings nearer the end.  One guy, a "designer", claimed he spent over $500 on his designs that were ignored.)

One of our best senators was appointed by the governor (Sam Nunn).

I can't name a politician today I really respect.

No Senators should be selected by the states not the "people" as it was at the beginning of the Republic.  Senators use to be accountable to the state's government and thus states' rights and interest were protected by the Senate while the people's rights and interest were under the House.  The 10th amendment exist in name only these days and this is mainly the result of the 17th amendment.

No, I get that part that it's not binding.  But why in the world would SF even feel obliged to pay reparations

for something they had no part of?
