profile of mental health issues and other violent issues in the past

and can still pass the background check and purchase a firearm?

I suppose the criteria is different in every state, maybe different in neighboring counties

is there room for judgement on the issue, such as an NFL Ref calling holding?

In Iowa, a felony conviction will ban someone from possessing a fire arm, until they are pardoned by the Governor.

I'm just wondering what else might get your permit denied?  things that are not felonies?

domestic violence?

Huh?

On the one hand, that summation was exactly what I’d expect. On the other, when I clicked the link, the locations were at least interesting.
I like that I live in one of those places (#9). I think you'd like it here, to be honest.

any kind of violent crime will cost you the ability to gain concealed carry permit here in NC... domestic a big one... history of mental health issues... history of and certainly current psych drugs... history or drinking or drug problems...

it's based on Sheriffs interpretation... some of which will keep a former serviceman who 'may' be suffering from undiagnosed PTSD to others who straight up say PTSD meets the psych concern threshold, and others who don't include it at all.  it comes down to the sheriff you signs each and every one of them in this state, or who appoints someone to do so- their discretion...

and then there is the 2A which rightfully points out that is a restriction which was expressly ensured no matter what.

and then there is interpretation up to whoever is reading the law or ordinance...

then there are lawyers who tell you what the law really means, and how they plan on enforcing or exploiting it via some loophole.

meanwhile, and statistically speaking, very few guns are used in violent crimes as compared to the number of guns in circulation... however, a gun that is used in a violent crime stands a much and i mean MUCH better chance of being used in a crime again... sorta like, oh- i don't know- people.... at the risk of making up a statistic on the spot, i've read where violent crime is done by a small percentage of the population, and it usually is or will be repeat offenders... meaning most people are good or at least respectful of each other, while a much smaller percentage aren't- and are responsible for something like 95% of the violent crimes... over and over.

Because the government doesn’t want you carrying your gun non-visibly unless they let you do so.

Interestingly, other states basically outlaw open carry in the vast majority of cases.
35 states allow open carry ( although the rules can differ), 7 states require a permit for open carry, and it is prohibited in 5 states- including Florida.

There is a bill being kicked around in Florida that will allow those with legally registered guns to conceal and carry without additional permit, and if passed would be the 25th state to do so.

For me- I don’t often feel the need to carry- I keep it in my house.  But for whatever reason- I like the idea of more legal gun owners carrying as opposed to less.

I kinda feel the same way. My wife and I discussed it last week. We have our permits and would prefer that others get them too.

I have not read the bill. Have you?

No it is still in Commitee.  I do know it has provisions in added by Law Enforcement which would create a portal for both student behavioral threats, as and a statewide portal to report all possible threats- and it would allow school district employees to carry on campus.

I bet I would too. I remember going to a friend‘s parents‘ lake house a few years back, and thought “Man, this well to do retired life seems pretty peachy.”

Some of those are very random. Winston-Salem is nice, but I don’t think it’s THAT nice. I was unimpressed by Greensboro/High Point. Oshkosh and Neenah are what they are. I get Myrtle Beach to a degree, thought actual Myrtle Beach is pretty gross.

When you say more legal gun owners, how do you mean?

Am I reading it correctly as “more people have to go through some kind of process”? Or something else.

Yes- do you still have to go through a background check and training to get a permit to purchase a weapon.

But in order to carry that weapon concealed in Florida you have to go through even more administrative things and this bill would eliminate that step. In other words if you have legally purchased and registered your weapon and gone through all the checks and balances you would no longer need a second permit to carry concealed.

I once dated someone whose dad insisted on her keeping a piece in her car. I bet that’s illegal in some states, and I bet it was not illegal in the state where we were living (it’s often a bad idea, but that’s another matter).

Were together for more than two years and I never actually saw it. Only time firearms ever came up were one time I was at her parents house when she was housesitting and at about three in the morning we heard noise coming from one of the upstairs rooms.

Based on how the house was built, it’s basically impossible for it to be an actual intruder. But She had anxiety up the yin Yang, so up we went with a gun and a flashlight. Turned out some critter got in through a hole in the roof, scratched on the floor a little bit and then left. Happy I had flex scheduling and could sleep in the next day.

I like this because the overwhelming majority of people, and gun owners, are law abiding.  They just want to protect themselves.

This will have little to no effect on those who purchase and carry illegally- and commit the overwhelming majority of violent crimes.  Those people will just have more folks around them who are able to defend themselves.
