One nation, one anthem. End of story. Don't like it? There's a fix for that.

Go try to create a new anthem in China. I dare ya. Lemme know how socialism works for ya.

Go try to smoke weed in Russia. I dare ya. Of course, we don't have any ultra-violent assholes to trade to get ya back. Let me know how that goes for ya.
So as long as people roll back the old term for the song, we’re hunky dory. Great!

I don't understand this remark, and I'm not trying to be obtuse or snarky, I just don't know what you mean?

The original 3rd verse, which has not been used in many, many years. I've never heard it in my life.

Me too. Or…. Neither!

The word obtuse always brings back the thought of the Shawshank redemption.

Yep.

I'm with you on most of this.

Speaking for me, I welcome anyone who wants to come here legally, adapt to our culture, work, achieve the dream. Come on into this great country.

Just don't try to change it.

Deal? Good.
The only constant in life is change, Badge. This country has changed a hell of a lot since 1787. I'd argue a lot of it is what makes this such a great country. I'd argue that some of the things that changed I'd like to see go away. This country's culture changed as new immigrants arrived, and I'm not sure this country would be quite as great as it is if we had the same cultural makeup we had in 1787.

But pretty much everyone who pushed for change, whether they were Mayflower material or whether they were recent immigrants, were trying to make the country greater (according to their best idea of what makes greatness).

I feel like there are a lot of people who look at the country we have now and say "let's stop here; no more change!" Well, there were people saying that 50 years ago, 100 years ago, and in most ways we're a hell of a lot greater than we were then. A lot of them argued about change about 160 years ago, and you may recall it was a pretty contentious argument. But we hashed it out and became greater.

This country is great, but it is not perfect. We're trying. But you have to allow change to try.

Sorry, I'm a bit sleepy today.

Basically, it's not really a "national anthem" because it's not the anthem of any country. It's just a name that some folks in the late 1910s gave to a song that was written in 1900 and sung by children's choir in segregated Jacksonville. I guess it's a song sung by folks that fought segregation, which we can all agree was a pretty just cause.

Basically, it seems a lot of folks are upset that it's called a national anthem by some folks. So if we just don't use that phrasing, we're in good shape. They sang America the Beautiful too. And it was just kinda a song that was there. NBD.

OK.  Then I guess I don't understand any of this.

Is there some codified procedure by which something becomes the National Anthem of The United States of America? Is it in the Constitution?

It's widely recognized both nationally and internationally, as being our national anthem.  Is there some further rigor that is required?

Sorry, sounds like you're talking about "The Star Spangled Banner" the song officially recognized as the national anthem. An act of Congress in 1931 did codify it as our national anthem.

BAB is talking about the song "Lift Every Voice and Sing" that some have a problem as it is often referred to as the "Black National Anthem". It is not recognized by any official government body as a national anthem anywhere: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lift_Every_Voice_and_Sing

Not all change is good.  Not even close.
There are a lot of people in this country who want changes that will not make this a better place- and that is often not their stated goal.

Were you aware that prior to playing this song the game announcer requests everyone to stand?

Like I said earlier the NFL is way off base with this one
They won't let me give blood anymore. The burnt orange color scares the hell out of the doctors.
