At least we finally shot the balloon down. Better late than never, I guess.
really late

after it crossed the entire continent
wouldn't be surprised if the payload was a huge basket of bat guano

I doubt "we" will ever know the payload, given how it was brought down.

I'd be interested in recovering any fragments that could indicate more about its purpose.

The US has unmanned aircraft that can get up to 60,000 feet. Why not fly a few of those up, pop it, and drag it down to the ground?

I don't know what the thing weighed.  I'd think that would be a very delicate operation.

I'd guess we can recover enough pieces of the thing is piece together the kinds of sensors it had on board.

how difficult would it have been to have a navy vessel under it when it was dropped?

I understand you might not be able to just park an aisrcraft carrier under it, but if it doesn't sink like an anvil at splash down, it could be recovered

perhaps it's not that important because someone knows exactly what it was?

The payload looked heavy to me, they claimed they were worried about it causing damage if shot down over the US.  I think it would be a lot better and easier to fish the fragments out of the water.  "We" should be able to ascertain whether it had only weather instruments or something more sinister.

The Electoral College seems to keep us at two main parties.  Obviously, the European systems generate multiple parties, for better or worse.
Yeah, our first past the post system forces voters to create coalitions of values, which is a weird thing. In other systems, no one has to compromise, save for the pols, and then you have other weird outcomes.

Granted, that makes the most sense in a system like Israel, where party seats are vote-percentage based. If you tighten the geography for single seats, it becomes de facto first past the post much of the time.

I'd be shocked if it wasn't more sinister than weather equipment

I think we'd be pretty sure of that before shooting it down and claiming a "spy" balloon
