My dog is a 70 lb black lab mix and she wouldn't harm a fly, but she barks extremely loud at any and every stranger in the house (or within 50 yards of the house if she can see or hear them).  She, too, is  light sleeper so there's zero chance of an intruder entering without our knowledge.

I think it's strange that you assume everyone with a gun (or a sword) and a plan for defending himself and his family, has some delusion of grandeur about taking on a criminal-- that we actually want or even crave such an encounter.

An assumption like that might be warranted for the open-carry dipshits who walk around town with rifles slung over their shoulders, but people with handguns in their bedside table aren't really the same category.

Bingo.

While permitted to do so, I don't carry. No need to where I live. Be different if I was still roaming around downtown Chicago these days.

I have a HS "friend" on FB who constantly pushes hyperliberal opinions (by someone else).  I poke him from time to time just for fun.  He loves some Bob Reich and Heather Ruchardson (who is not that bad IMHO) for example.  Reich appears to have "sold out" completely, nearly as I can tell.

hah, I've lived on a dead end street in a town of less than 300 since 1989

I've yet to lock my doors

I don't own a gun any longer, but it was just a bit of peace of mind next to the bed at night

I didn't expect to ever use it and I certainly hoped I'd never

If you are thinking of getting a good guard dog dont get a golden retriever

they are great children dogs but they are not guard dogs

we had one for 15 years and if an intruder had ever broken into our house our golden whould have just sat there and said silverware is on the left and the wall safe is on the right have a good day

golden is for the bark

similar to the report of the 44 mag or a 12 gauge

the bark won't put a hole in the ceiling

Ask a Wine Pro: What Should I Do With the Cork When My Server Presents It? | VinePair

When a server extends their hand and a freshly popped cork lands in front of you, there’s a failsafe way to handle the situation. “If the cork is given to you, take it, say ‘thank you so much,’ and set it right down,” Beavers says. If a sommelier believes that the presentation of the cork serves some greater purpose, they might encourage you to pick it back up and give you instructions on what to do next. Most likely, though, once you’ve set the cork down, the job is done.

Some diners might be tempted to sniff the cork before they place it back on the table — a practice that, Beavers explains, can be used to see if a wine is corked. It might not be worth your time to do this, though. “There is no science to prove that smelling a cork is an indication of cork taint in the bottle,” he says. “There’s also this weird thought that smelling the cork is like smelling the wine. If you’re smelling the cork, you’re just smelling the wine soaked into an organic material that has its own aromas.”

I am a random kind of guy ...

Way back, I tried to devise a computer program to generate random numbers.  It's not very easy.

That guy has monetized being hated.
That's why no one respects him.
He purposely has absurd takes just for attention.  And it works.
It's gross.

Sums up the majority of political pundits.
And "sports analysts".  They have to write "something", and they need it to garner attention, which leads to hyperbole and outright silliness often as not.  Do they really know more than say ELA or about anyone else here?  Maybe a few have occasional insider info.

Basically, many TV channels feature "24 hours" of stuff on some rather narrow topic, like "news", and they fill much of that with talking heads, opinions, feature shows with someone yacking about some topic that they KNOW their audience wants to hear, how bad those OTHER folks are, etc.

.
IF your intruder is some kind of crack shot snooper, he's going to shoot you in your sleep.  None of us can predict how a home invasion will go, which means it's likely to just be a shitshow on all sides, with panic and errors all around.
.
All I know is that if it comes to hand-to-hand, I have no fight experience, but I was an offensive lineman for years and am not small.  If he's a skinny tweaker piece of shit, I'm locking the front door and he's stuck in there with me.  And my hammer and screwdriver are all I need.  <-- delusion of grandeur, see

This is often correct.  While burglaries and break-ins are on the rise in some places, they're not being committed by special ops teams with a plan and high-level execution.  If they have a firearm, the uncertainty and panic makes them more dangerous to a resident, not less, although they might still suck at aiming a weapon.  Same is true if the resident has a gun (or any weapon, I suppose).  The situation is likely to spin more out of control, not settle down while the intruder realizes he's made a mistake and gets on the floor with his hands behind his back while somebody calls the cops.  This is why the cops in my family and some who are friends have always drilled in me to never, ever produce a gun unless I am plan to use it with deadly intent.

While I agree with the principle, I realize I never committed to such a thing for much of my adult years and probably would not have pulled a gun on an intruder, even if it was the smart thing to do.  Killing somebody is so abhorrent to me that I probably would've put myself in a bad situation unnecessarily.  However, that's changed now that I'm married and also have a step-son still in the house.  Somewhat unfortunately, I've come to terms with the fact that if somebody gets in my home that's not supposed to be there, I can't afford to ask questions or take chances.  I'm going to do my best to kill them.  The laws are "friendly" in that regard here in Texas (far as I know), although I'd probably want to throw up every minute of the rest of my life and hope to God I never have to do anything like that.

The last part, I guess that's how I looked at things when I was single.  Oddly, while I didn't want to fire a gun at anybody, I always kept a good clubbing stick nearby and figured I had pretty good odds beating the hell out of somebody.  I've seen a lot of reports of B-and-Es where the perps aren't armed at all or have a pocket knife or something.  I'd have been pissing myself, but I kinda figured if I don't freeze up I'm in better shape than that guy.

Love reading the home defense posts. I approach home defense a little differently, I'm more worried about collateral damage, than any property being taken or damaged. My daughters bedroom goes across the steps to our downstairs. I live is suburbia and a house to my west is only 16 feet away from mine.

Those Desert Eagles you guys are toting can go through 4 walls and still have stopping power, I don't want that. So I have a Ruger .45 in our bedroom fire safe with cowboy load (2/3 the power of a regular bullet.) It will still put a hole in a person right in front of me, (or at the bottom of my steps,) but won't make it through 2 sheets of dry way and kill my kid or neighbor. If there is a threat in my house (but not my bedroom) I can open the safe in under 3 seconds and have firepower protection at the ready. My wife and I both take annual gun safety course and I drag her to the range at least once more a year. (Me and my buddies will go out 6+ times to practice.)

I also have a short ninja sword that is bedside (2 fencing classes at OSU, and 4 years of Kendo classes) it's my goto to investigate, like if I hear a strange noise or my dog barks.

We also have a 45 lb pointer that will raise a ruckus if there any strangers/noises she doesn't recognize. (She's more likely to hear that noise before me.) I'd bet it's over a dozen times now that she a barked me awake, and I end up wondering around my house flipping lights on carrying a sheathed sword before figuring out theres a nocturnal animal outside that caught her attention.

I sleep easy at night confident my family is safe.

Just ordered, with 1000 rounds (live). Colt 357.

Cheaper than buying a sporty car. At least that's what I'll tell the wife. Knowing her she'll take it and claim it as her own - like the last pistol I bought.

That is Mrs. DeTiger's gun of choice.  I'm not going to say where she keeps it because I don't want the lectures about how guns should always be under lock and key, and already have some misgivings about it myself.  But the fact is, if she (or I) ever needed it in an emergency, it's probably not going to do us much good under lock and key as we'd be toast before we could ever get to it.  It's not in an outright unsafe place, but plenty of people would disagree with its nest, so........save it.

And I gotta say, when I met her, I was surprised she had this and knew how to use it.  You wouldn't associate her with a pistol just to look at her, and certainly not spending any time with her.

Texas woman, I suppose.
