It's pouring rain here, and my wife wanted me to drive my step son to the airport.  Ugh.  White knuckle time, portions of the freeway were flooded maybe 6 inches near the airport.  It's never a pleasant drive, but coming back at 7 AM was a bit harrowing, there are enough "touristers" in the wrong lane every time ...

An ice storm around here shuts everything down.  Had that happened, we MIGHT have been able to walk to MARTA and get to the airport, but it was raining pretty hard.  I've been in ice storms where I couldn't stand up on a sidewalk for long, and any tilt and I'm gone.

Yeah, not really a pressing need around here, usually.  If we got an ice storm, I'd just stay at home a day.  The next day it'd be 50°F.

I just packed my baseball cleats.  We're leaving tomorrow for Orlando for five days so I can train in good weather, then to North Port for Camp One.  They had two camps this year and I signed up for both, not sure my legs are up to it.  I get two days in between at least.

My wife claims she's excited, but I think she's just being a good sport.  In February we're off again on  an 18 day cruise.

Sounds like fun, CD.  What will she do while you're in camp?

She likes to sleep late, I get up around 6 AM.  She gets breakfast (they put us at a Hampton Inn) and then lounges by the pool or goes with some other wives for a massage etc., then lunch, then she comes to my afternoon game.  In the evening, they have a dinner/event every night she attends with me.

So it's an easy time for her.  I come away usually beat up and sore.

Omaha’s streetcar project is speeding ahead, but Warren Buffett is not on board.

In a letter to the World-Herald, the 92-year-old billionaire noted that he rarely takes sides on local issues in his hometown, but decided to “make an exception on the streetcar issue.”

“It’s an important matter,” he wrote, “and it’s going to be hugely expensive if implemented.”

Omaha’s streetcar system overcame its last major hurdle on the road to construction earlier this month with the approval of $440 million in bonds to pay for the project. The project is also contractually tied to the development of a Mutual of Omaha skyscraper in downtown Omaha, a detail that adds pressure to the streetcar’s progress.

It would be difficult for anyone to tap the brakes now — even the Oracle of Omaha himself.

Still, Buffett urged caution and suggested that the city instead invest in Omaha’s bus system.

“Residents can be far better served by extended or more intensive service by the bus system,” Buffett wrote. “As population, commerce and desired destinations shift, a bus system can be re-engineered. Streetcars keep mindlessly rolling on, fueled by large public subsidies. Mistakes are literally cast in cement.”

Construction costs alone are estimated at $306 million.
