Sowell's "Basic Economics" should be the default textbook for high school or even college Econ classes.

Nolan Ryan grew up in Alvin, about 30 miles from my town but in the same county. I still remember when the Astros let him go to the Rangers in the late 80’s. Boy people were mad.

I do t follow baseball much, but why wasn’t he ever awarded a Cy Young ?  Did the press hate him, or was there something else in play ?

I don't think the press hated him.

The most games he ever won in a season was 22 (lost 16), and Catfish won it that season with a 25-12 record. The year prior he won 21 and lost 16. Jim Palmer won it that year with a 22-9 record. Ryan's ERA's were considerably higher too.

(I had to look some of that up - I knew about Catfish)

Ryan won over 20 games only twice in his 27 years. This I knew.

Well those two clubs made repeated trips to the fall Classic in the '60s-'70s.I'm sure if he had that A's 3 straight squad he would have had a few more W's.Saw heard Nolan pitch when I was a lad and he was with the Angels at old Municipal Stadium.Flame thrower or vapor trails comes to mind

Ryan also walked twice as many batters as the next-highest pitcher.  Some (eventually) viewed his pitching as selfish - never giving in to the batter, either striking him out or walking him.  Not much for his fielders to do.  Rather give up 3 walks than allow a hit.
His '87 season is the oddest ever:  8-16 win/loss record, but led the league in ERA and Ks.  What sense does that make?
.
All-time leader in strikeouts, walked batters, and hits per 9 allowed.  That's basically all you need to know about him.

yup, Badge is too young to remember Charley Finley
The A's won the AL West for five consecutive seasons, from 1971 to 1975, and they captured three straight World Series from 1972 to 1974.

Free Agency killed the A's - small market

Jim Palmer went 20-9 with the 1971 Baltimore Orioles — the last team in Major League history with four twenty-game winners on the same staff? Mike Cuellar (20-9), Pat Dobson (20-8) and Dave McNally (21-5) were the other three aces on this truly legendary pitching staff.

Did you know that Jim Palmer was an underwear model for Jockey (see ad below), appearing in both print and television advertisements throughout the 1970s? Did you know he donated all proceeds from the sale of his underwear poster to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation?

makes sense that he played on a bad team
and it probably wasn't the bullpen's fault - he finished games throwing 100+

My step son went to a local bar here last night and saw Charles Barkley sitting in the back.  The bar tenderess said he came there often and tried to hide.

We've had lunch there and it's pretty good for bar food.

Not at all. I remember hating on the A's.

And I remember Jim Palmer - he was one that I wanted to be like. Weird motion but it worked.

A couple I know in Round Rock have spotted Nolan Ryan two times at the Louisiana Longhorn restaurant.  I never saw him despite my many trips there.  Never had the heart to tell utee when I would suggest meeting there that I was really just hoping to spot Ryan.
