My experience has been in Illinois, Wisconsin and Florida.

Generally, they cost $10-25.

For renewals, generally Yes. In some states, you can do everything online, including new applications.

Many facilities are open on weekends. Of course, to get a job, most places require an ID...

Duh is right.

You and your ilk are retarded when it comes to understanding how the poor live.
"Just hop online".......don't have a computer
"they cost $10-25"......don't have $25 to spare
"open on weekends"......works on weekends
needed an ID to get your job......got my job 7 years ago, lost my ID 2 years ago
.
Yes, this is an excuse for everything.  And yes, it's true for many.
Until you make it a major holiday and provide transportation or online accessibility (free), then it's not easy or 'no problem' acquiring an ID.
Yes, that's ridiculous and yes, it's gross that it's true.

Oh, and voter fraud isn't a thing.  So this whole conversation is a waste of everyone's time.  You're more likely to be the victim of a shark attack in Kansas.
But please, carry on grilling up that nothing burger.

Exactly.

This policy has me flabbergasted.

Should being able to vote be as hard as buying a firearm?
North Carolina has an interesting history on this. A previous voter ID law was struck down because the legislature commissioned studies on what types of ID's black people were more likely to use v. other people, then disallowed those IDs for voting purposes.

The No. 1 thing I'd be interested in is how many people are actually voting without an ID. We know who votes in each election. We have a big list of various forms of ID. I assume a proponent of ID laws would want to demonstrate the number of questionable votes. Though if it was low, perhaps not. Also perhaps not if there was a worry that group would be analyzed in some way that made the enterprise look bad.

The timing element is interesting. The Supreme Court is gonna flip. There's no super majority in the legislature and a split between legislature and governor. So this would likely be on hold
until 2024. Such is life in that arena.
I'd also like to know how many would actually vote if it didn't require an ID
or how many aren't voting because of this requirement
is this really a thing?

For those too poor/busy working to get an ID, guess what?  They're not voting anyway.

This whole "issue" is just noise on both sides.  But one party is making it a priority to pass unnecessary legislation.  So thanks, Rs!

There are at least 25 locations in and around Charlotte alone.
Ooo. Now we've hit on a subject I'm much more interested in than voter ID, good and bad DMVs and getting to them.

Let's put a 30-mile radius, there are nine places where I can get a license (the map you're looking at might be pretty generous and NC has different offices for licence plates, so it doubles the numbers).

Let's take where I am at the exact moment, a gentrifying neighborhood a semi-short drive from downtown. The closest DMV is an hour away via public transit. The next appointment I can get is Feb 21, and I'll have to take the only slot availible. The next option is 1:40 away and I can get an appointment on Feb 23. From what I've been told, those "appointments" are more suggestions. The first time I tried to go, I got there at 2:30 (I had an appointment that I misread) and the lady popped out and asked who all had been there since 7 am. Several people raised hands.

All told, if you don't own a car, you'll be lucky to not sink a full day into it, possibly two.

It's interesting because as an adult, I've mostly been in states that have shockingly good DMVs. Miss that. I have a good workaround here, but it involves taking advantage of a very flexible job and driving out into the country.

It's not political. This should be a non-partisan issue.

"Thanks, Rs!"? Who do you think initiated the appeal to the NC Supreme Court? Thank them for this nonsense.

Voting is a constitutional right, under the rule of law. If the rule of law indicates that an ID is required, and I believe it should be, then so be it.

Period.

Don't bring politics into this debate. It's a non-starter.

Yeah, no one is being an asshole by not understanding the plight of the poor, but at least be aware of the ignorance.
*not just poor people, I mean pooooooor people

Yes, you have to make appointments in advance now.  That was a surprise to me, since the last time I renewed before COVID, was like 9 years ago.

And yes, you might have to make an appointment several months in the future.

So what?

As for the quality/efficiency of the DMV experience, that varies greatly by state/city/location.  We had to make an appointment 4 months in advance for my daughter's learner's permit, but we arrived 15 minutes early and were out the door 5 minutes after our original appointment time.  It was incredibly fast and efficient.

So, that's not a thing I'm particularly worried about, with respect to voter ID requirements.

As for riding the bus? Yes, if you don't have a car, you'll have to ride the bus a lot of places.  Or catch a ride with a friend.  Again, so what?  It comes right along with living in a civilized society.

The GA law seems resonable to me.  The NC court ruled it was unconstitutional under the NC constitution.

I'd like to learn more about a political party sending out valid ballots by mail though.
