Oh, I really don’t like how they have gotten out of their lane at points to fire off weirdly screechy  liberal things. That’s just where I am.

I personally still feel as free as I did 30 years ago.  Others personally can feel differently.

There were obviously some shorter term things during COVID that were an issue, but they are entirely gone, for me anyway.

Now if you asked if I thought society today was as free as 30 years ago, I'd have to contemplate that for a while.

Yes, the outlet that Twitter suspended (under FBI pressure) for a true laptop story in October 2020. A story that has been proven true.

That outlet.

If an outlet like that, with dozens of lawyers and millions of readers, can be silenced, what do you think could happen to YOU?

This is actually really scary stuff.

Ask @Drew4UTk what he had to go through to keep Big Tech out of our business here (OK, it was the board down South of this one - A51). Seriously. They were (and still are) coming after our little site. What do we have? 200 members?
On the one hand, I think that was a stupid and gross thing that Twitter did. On the other, in situation like that, businesses do you have the right to be that particular kind of gross and stupid. As such, we should respond with our market forces and diversify our ability to observe news. Which, frankly we should do anyway.

I definitely feel more free than 30 years ago, but to be fair, I had a bedtime and was it legally allowed to hold a job at that point.

The freedom of society thing is interesting because there is just about no argument that we are not more able to project our speech and more able to consume the speech of others that we have ever been as a society. This is simply a reality.

That being said, we are also much, much more vulnerable to the fallout of other people‘s speech and we run into new conduit problems all over.

Such a weird, far from reality opinion.

People are in jail, fired, cancelled, and otherwise blacklisted in this country- just in the last few years- for simply asking a question or expressing an opinion, in a non violent way. You know this.

The violent ones are the ones pointing the finger at others for being violent.  The original election deniers ( which is not always a bad thing by way in a country where it is supposed to be we the people) are the ones accusing others of being election deniers.  The people skirting around the constitution are the one accusing others of trying to destroy the Constitution. The people who have created An environment where crime actually pays are the ones accusing others of being soft on crime.  The list goes on and on.  It’s like opposite Day on Seinfeld. The people who have most destroyed democracy are the ones accusing others of being a threat to democracy.

I think the good news is there’s enough people out there that have seen through it, and there’s going to be some realignment and accountability coming soon.

I knew there were questions I should not ask at work, maybe I would not be fired, but I'd take damage.  We sat through a LOT of "training" that was complete crap at least once a year in the 1990s.  An old hand told me before the first one to sit quietly and say nothing, he was right.  I told a few folks later the same thing.

It was very amateurish nonsense poorly done by poorly trained "facilitators".  I got called in on one because the technicians revolted.  The  black technicians started it all by arguing with the "facilitator" that he didn't know what he was talking about.  I showed up with my director (who was a couple levels above me) rather wide eyed.

And yes, it was all about how racist everything was.  Circa 1992.

I’m not sure which part of what I wrote that addresses/conflicts with. It’s basically a very dramatic telling of the last part.

It’s also worth noting, I suppose, that our freedom in sharing info on a grand skill, makes all the drama feel very close to home.

You are a very level headed intelligent dude- obvious over time. I have great respect for your opinion- even if I don’t always agree with it or understand it.  We could break bread ( or Bourbon) and disagree all day, and we would still have a good time.

I guess my point is, there are so many places, platforms, and people from all sides were that just is not true. You are not free to express an opinion that disagrees for fear of being shunned or even beaten.  I guess you could still say it’s freedom of speech but it comes with fear of speech.  Not sure how to fix that.

I don't want to do this, but if I did, I wouldn't, and that is wear Confederate flag hats or shirts around here.  I don't want to display Nazi symbols either.  I could probably get away fine with a BLM shirt.

I don't have sports team stuff on my car for obvious reasons.  I do wear stuff often.  Some things just seem prudent.  I don't go looking for trouble.

To the bolded, I'm glad I can still trick someone.

On the other part, it's interesting because we have this vortex of so, so much speech. Like, there's never been an era when you could express any opinion without some fear of shunning (and maybe violence). We could argue there's been a narrowing (probably) as political hobbyism has become such a thing. But the main issue is so much speech that's so easy.

Like, if you said something grotesque or unpopular, it was likely not recorded. Now we put it on the record. And if someone shunned you, it wasn't that many people. Now more people than you could ever hope to know can shun you with no effort. We used to have to clog phone lines or write letters to tell some company to fire someone. Now tens of thousands across the country can put the fear into an employer while driving to work.

IN some ways, it's the issue of the internet. We can find delightful people to talk football with and say terrible things to someone we've never met, and it's all cut off.

And in a big way, we're talking norms. We're talking about being nice to people with disagree with. Holding our tongues when we see something that pisses us off. I thin we should do more of this, not because it encourages free speech, but because it encourages better interactions. Like, we're all free to be jerks, but the path to a better world is probably to not be that.

So I got backed into in a parking lot with both of us in our cars.  I was stationary and he accelerated back into me.
I get the email today that because he told them something different, it's him vs me and they "have to" believe his statement.
.
My car gets damaged and I get to pay for it?  Is there no recourse when someone lies?

Some lady at church backed into our parked car a few years back.  I got an estimate on repairs, $1400.  I looked at the damage, some scuffs and the rubber around the bumper was dented in.  I pulled it back out.  The lady said she'd pay for the repair with a check.  My wife showed her the estimate and told her $500 would do.  A week or so later I gave the wife a check for $250 to return to the lady thinking $250 would cover the loss of value to the car for the scuffs.  Lady was happy.

Life is not fair.  Sometimes people lie about things when they see advantage.  And at times there can be no recourse.  Most of it understand this and regret it and suck it up.
