Why don't we just have government run these businesses at zero profit?

(Given what I do for a living, you can probably guess that I would never buy a house in a flood zone.)

What DO you do for a living?

I notice often that attempts to make "life fair" end up doing the oppposite.

"We" set out to "tax the rich" and of course end up taxing incomes, some of which is pretty easy to dodge anyway, and the wealthy chuckle.  But it is not fair.

My kids would say that until they were about 10.

It would hurt my company too much.

When I retired, I was replaced by TWO others at my level.  TWO.  I was truly shocked when I was told this as I had almost nothing to do for the years I was in that position.

My boss was trying to build an empire to justify getting promoted to the next level.  Last I heard he was still working at his same level.  He was promoted to that level early in circa 1985 and is still there, it really gauls him.

I think I helped the company when I departed as I was nearly worthless to them, but they had to pay me an extra year's salary.  They still prop up my health insurance.  It's amazingly cheap.

It'd be nice to enjoy your job and have some sense of fulfillment in it.  Probably the only thing that fits the bill for me was when I used to play music professionally.  That was fun, despite being hard work.  In live situations audiences seemed to enjoy themselves and in recording situations the artists were usually grateful.  That was nice.  But I never did that full time.  I teach a couple classes at my church and some have said they get a lot out of it.  That's rewarding, but it's not a job.

I used to work for oil companies doing...it doesn't matter, it's so boring I can't stand to describe it.  Good money but nobody missed me when I left the industry and all day you work knowing you don't matter much, if you weren't there, somebody else would just fill the spot and do the same thing.  Lately I've been working for my wife's clinic, where she and the other provider assure me that my job matters, but judging by what they pay me, it doesn't.  I shuffle some papers around and know that an adequately competent 6th-grader could do my job.

I went back to school for a MS in Data Science.  Should finish next Spring, and hopefully get a job that pays more.  I reckon I still won't have much job satisfaction.  I'll write some code to manipulate some numbers, maybe query a database, feed some other numbers to a machine-learning algorithm and oh god it's so boring I can't even type about it anymore.  In the end I'll know it still doesn't matter.  If I didn't do the job, a company would or wouldn't make some decision that probably doesn't matter much, and anyway, if I didn't do it, somebody else just like me would.  All in all, I'm just another brick in the wall.

I had periods when I was pretty enthused about my job, but mostly I was just dragging the salary.  I was on one very good effective team of about 25 folks who for the most part were competent and got along, that was very rare.  Our managers were competent and got along also, that was unique.  Then the managers retired.

I like my job, which helps.

I would probably love it if there wasn't so much regulatory mumbo jumbo involved.

One project I had a while back required 28 different permits from various agencies within the municipal, township, county, state and federal bureaucracies. That sucked.

I've been really enjoying my new job that started last December
doesn't feel like work

my previous job for over 23 years was not enjoyable

I'd be retired today if not for this fresh start at something enjoyable

I might work another 5 years
