I have a niece that just graduated from A&M.  Not sure if she has student loans, but I suspect she has some.  Her degree was in psychology.  She graduated cum laude (I think magna FWIW).  She can't find a job.  She is working at our family business doing secretarial work.

There are a lot of people who are pretty upset about this cancellation, and it's not all people like some of us.
This is almost assuredly true, though in America, most anything the government does is going to leave a lot of folks upset. (We excel at finding means to be upset)

It's not good policy. You're helping people who are doing a degree of well (took on debt, got a degree to be a mid-grade professional). You're helping poor people with enough wherewithal to get out of their situation as a child, but not enough good guidance to finish the deal and become rich. The policy benefits people with degrees living in less-wealthy areas (non-urban to rural). The benefits are uneven, and they reward the mid-level professional class, which is almost assuredly more people who started there than people who worked their way there.

The irony is it's not even really "vote buying." It's making some people's lives easier, and more just vote maintenance for show, and of course delivering on a campaign promise. A good chunk of the people getting this were gonna vote for the current admin anyway. And $10,000 isn't so much isn't going to swing that many folks on the other side of things. It's really just sating pretty upset people, at the expense of leaving others more upset, though for many of them, it's just a matter of degree in being upset.

Two questions because I'm nosy
1. Living at home?
2. Good secretarial work? (That can be, maybe not lucrative, but can fund a professional life)

#1  She just moved back home.
#2  Our family business is not a well run organization, so I have no idea to the answer.

“Where’s my handout like those losers?” feels like outrage.

Utter disappointment about BS sounds like outrage. If you’d like, I can reassess and change the word outrage to angst and irritation.

out·rage

noun
an extremely strong reaction of anger, shock, or indignation.

Similar: indignation, fury, anger, rage

verb
arouse fierce anger, shock, or indignation in (someone).

I could actually go along with student loan forgiveness if done in a thoughtful manner that might help a bad situation

such as.......... there seems to be a problem with a teacher shortage in our grade schools and high schools.
how about, if you are employed as a teacher or immediately take the job and keep it for at least a year, $10K of your student loan will be forgiven

I haven't read up on how this is being done.  Perhaps it is very well thought out and I simply need to educate myself, because the media isn't going to help in that regard.

I have a sneaky feeling some politicians are getting rich on interest paid to them on federal debt

how bout banning student loans except for certain majors likely to give the student the ability to pay it back

if not that then just ban it all together

its one thing to bail folks out but its even worse if the government allows it to happen over and over

Possible option in this vein, have a way to divert funds with a multiplier.

So if I take certain in-demand jobs, I can convert up to $4,000 a year into debt relief with a 3.5x multipliers. I let $1000 wipe away $3000 in debt.

Probably downsides I’ve not yet considered, but it’s an incentive structure.

I like that a lot better then just handing them a free ride

Hmmm. I don’t love some of the mechanics elements, but I love where it’s coming from.

the fact is, borrowing a bit was at one point feasible and logical as a way to help finance and education. And things have shifted to the point where it’s not really a good approach. I can see some regulation, though for the most part, we need to message strongly that this is a bad idea.

colleges have financial advisors for students

this could easily be put in place as to spending more than "X" amount is not a good idear for "Z" degree

but, colleges like to print degrees as students print money
