We should all enroll in graduate school and take out $10K in loans.  Attendance and grades are optional.

Obviously, if loans are forgiven, any student from here on should take out loans, needed or not.

I just don't understand the legality of spending $300 billion without Congressional action.

And if this is a good thing and legal, why only $10 K?

Good point.  That's a lot of cash, not some minor item say buried in the budget for the Dept. of Education.  Where are the funds coming from?  A future Congress could refuse to fund.

Yeah, let's keep those 20-somethings deep in debt so that they can't contribute to the actual economy!!!!
If they had a degree in something useful, they would most certainly be contributing to the economy, and they would be paying of the loans they signed up for.

I completely disagree with this buying of votes.

We're going to have to do that with China someday. There's no paying that debt, ever.
While this could be true, our debt to China is a comparatively small percentage of overall Federal debt.

We owe more to Japan than China.  And the US itself owns the majority of the debt.

This is a guy who financed his college degree 100% working several jobs to do it

I dont think these babies are better then me so why the hell should they get a free ride
Ok, so this actually taps into something that’s  probably more interesting.

when you financed your college degree, how much did it cost and what year was it?

So China has taken Hong Kong and next they will take Taiwan.

Then we could take the Caymans and Luxembourg.

Why has the cost to tuition risen so much?

The US Federal debt is around $30 T and 3% of that is owed to China.

My dad paid for my undergrad pretty much, it probably was $2500 a year or so.  I paid for my grad degree using a TA, no debt.  It ran around $5 K a year.

This was not recent ...

Without being an expert in the subject, it seems a combination of factors. Ever-rising demand, more available loan money, decline in public funding, General expansion of the research world, probably some other things I just don’t know about.

But, this particular train of interest, not quite on point. If there is some good analysis of it, I would love to see it

Expansion of student activies centers and facilities

Expansion in number of nonteaching employees

Ready available of loans to finance demand.

Over 60% of US HS grads attend college, in Europe, the figure is closer to 35%.  College is widely an expectation.  Folks go because they can, and feel they should, maybe getting a degree in sociology, or no degree at all.  But they go, demand is high.

Rising demand was a huge part of it. Having to pay professors in useless fields is a huge part of it. Maintaining/preserving very old buildings and constructing far too many new ones is a huge part of it.

Anyway, one does not need a BA to get a good job.

Anecdote:

Both of my sons are in the six figures now, and then some.

Neither has a B_ degree and both have 825+ credit scores with no debt other than housing.

Me:

Very proud.

Them:

Why should I have to pay for a bunch of losers with shit degrees? Where is my handout for doing things right?
