Back in the day, I questioned some people who were very ardent about climate change to tell me its cause, in a paragraph or so, a short explanation of the concept.  Out of five people, one could partially come up with something.  I also questioned the "other side" and none of six people could explain the theory, at all.  I even questioned a person at work who claimed to be an engineer and she couldn't tell me how humans were causing climate change, but she believed it was a bad problem.

Global Warming morphed into Climate Change about 15 years ago.  Great CYA move.

It's technically more accurate, really, I don't think it was some nefarious plot.

I mentioned before trying to read up on it, quite a bit, it is more complex than I could handle, but I can outline the basic theory.

A friend said he felt is was distinct in a way because it was a factor of attaching political beliefs to something innate (race, gender, sexual orientation) as compared to something chosen (profession, religion, etc.).

On a personal level, and remember I'm highly cynical, I think it's just a case of branding. Tying politics to each category of identity is as old as politics itself, and is basically the MO of every party that exists. The raising of it to something really bad seemed, to me anyway, more like a narrative cudgel because we need at least one anchor for freakout per month per side.

I find it is common for folks to believe in a thing with rather sparse information about it.  I used to wonder how folks could be hoodwinked in financial schemes that I'd read about.  Shirley no one would fall for that.

I must say though, that Nigerian prince came in for me Big Time.  I'm glad I sent him my banking information.

To be fair, we are on a college football message board, and the vast majority of people, including us, it was very little about how football really works.

I’m a little tied up at work, so I can’t fully expound on it at the moment. But short answer, no that is not what I mean.

I think folks here have a pretty good idea overall.  But we aren't making decisions based on how much we know about it either.  If I personally decided for example that climate change was a huge problem, I'd at least familiarize myself with the basic premise and read up on what can be done to fix it.

I wouldn't just go out protesting knowing almost nothing about it.

I mean, we regularly complain about play calling with little sense of defensive structuring or how specific plays work.

I guess my question would be this, would it be enough to say “burning of fossil fuels seems to have negative impacts on the environment, and cause slight increases of the overall world temperature, which in turn causes a spate of weather issues that cause problems for people and animals. or at least that’s what experts seem to be saying.”? Would you want more detail?

(This isn’t me arguing that, more just trying to boil down a generalized argument)

What is it about fossil fuels that is bad?  And why?
