Chicago has become such a crime infested decaying sh*thole- that not long after it’s wealthiest resident and the wealthiest person in the state of Illinois- Ken Griffin ($25 billion net worth) ditched the city and state as his permanent residence for Palm Beach, Florida - he’s now relocating his hedge fund headquarters- Citadel - to Miami. Citadel has around 1,000 employees in Chicago, some will stay as Citdael will still maintain an office in Chicago, but  most are expected to make the move to the new HQ in South Florida.

The former Governor and mega millionaire Bruce Rauner also moved to Florida. He butted heads with the disgraced former Speaker for 4 years and got nothing done.

If you have the choice of living in Chicago or any city at that latitude vs Miami.......you pick Miami.  Duh.

I personally would probably lean to Seattle, though I'd want to check that, or perhaps Boston, over Miami.  Then there are a host of smaller cities to consider as possibilities, weather would be similar in all of them except near the coasts.  Maybe Albany, NY would work.

Boise, Idaho would make my list also.

Miami isn't for old people anymore. Those days are long gone. It's increasingly becoming a playground for the young wealthy. Nothing but flashy overpriced night clubs, bars, restaurants, shops and sweet ass modern billion dollar condo buildings going up everywhere. Miami used to be cheap place to live and stay. Now you've got to have serious bread to live there.

I've spent some time in Miami, it's not my cup of tea.

It's not the end of the world either.

Yeah, except they waited to move until they were in their later years, because they loved Chicago so much and wanted to stay. That also applies to me. I absolutely used to love that chitty.

It is not what it was, and there is no returning. Bad policy will do that.

It's over.

The "money" is leaving.

Different folks like different strokes.  Good friends of mine are from St. Paul and retired in northern Wisconsin, not my cup of tea.  They don't like the heat.

We looked around a fair bit for a place to retire, this checked out options pretty well.  It's not for everyone.

Well plainly, the Mediterranean climate is probably "best" for human beings.  That's why there's infinite people living between Santa Barbara and San Diego.  That's why Hawai'i is a thing.  Leaving the pizza oven of Phoenix for 4 days and spending time in SoCal openend my eyes.  To have nice, warm days AND cool evenings is fantastic.
.
That being said, I can't seem to find an answer to this:  did the first settlers here not know about latitude and climate?  I'm guessing that 'land is land' after a fraught Atlantic crossing, but Virginia and New England seem like stupid-ass places to stay.  All the tales of winter woe were overtly unnecessary.  Did they not know that down south, there were no tough winters???  The coastal south is fantastic!
.
Today, anyone in love with Wisconsin or Chicago or whatever other Siberian Shangri-La is just a slave to tradition.  Overly proud of their tough skin and bizarre willingness to overcome volunteered obstacles.
Hell, I guess you can't worship the Rose Bowl and the sunshine and the San Gabriels unless you live in a frozen-over hell.

Sure, they knew all about latitude, and climate, and therein was their problem.  They didn't understand the other factors that regulate climate, like ocean currents.

Montreal is at the same latitude as Paris or London and is obviously MUCH colder.  Seattle is at the same as Chicago more or less and is much warmer.

There also was a major factor relating to ocean currents and where they could sail and make progress.  They didn't know about currents at first, they really dictated who could settle where in the New World to a large degree.

Yeah, that Gulf Stream is the boss. I know this one guy who is a sailboat racer (hobby). He was on a crew that sailed from New York to Bermuda and back. He said that the Stream altered the courses so much that the race was extended by four days.

Once you get into that thing with a sailing vessel, you can't barely get out. It can take you hundreds of miles off course.

Of course most settlers didn't know about this until it was too late.

You can head for Florida from Bermuda and never make it.

The Stream is also the main reason why boaters doing the Great Loop go counter-clockwise.

It's also why it's fun to actually go in the water at Florida beaches vs freakin' torture in CA without a wetsuit.

Ocean currents are important, for a lot of things.  There is a fear with some that the North Atlantic current might lapse due to ice melt, which curiously would mean an "ice age" for Europe.  This is controversial at this point.
