It used to be a sign of considerable wealth of course "back in the day".  I think now it's closer to middle class wealth for anyone who worked a few decades at a decent job.

And saved.

A millionaire in Costa Rica is probably doing pretty well.

I think if you have $5 mil pretax and have reasonable spending patterns, you are indeed set barring a real meltdown.

If you have $2 mil, you're good if you own your living space, or close to it, and don't have other loans.  A real meltdown would of course hit everyone.

With 5 Mil at age 60 you could take $250K/year and still have the same money at 90. This assumes around a 6% return on investment.
