I understand that stations are independently owned - I worked for an owner in high school

just saying that folks are making money on the high price of fuel

obviously the oil companies are making the most

just saying that record profits for the huge corporations that are oil companies are part of the record prices

I'd guess they could take 20 cents per gallon off right now and still make a very nice profit, but......... why would they?

Air travel during Covid was great, minus wearing the ineffective masks of course. No lines anywhere, and a row to yourself on the plane.

I should get special treatment from the airlines, as I was one of the ones who kept them open for 2 years...

:)
Don't they already give you special treatment for flying that much?

So that's actually a little interesting to me in a sort of spiraling way.

We're making the argument that business has to react to government "signals." That would imply something real and tangible.

But the quote above is not really all that real and tangible. It's something that was pulled out of the middle of a meandering answer about the economy. The only way it's a signal is if the current president is extremely on-point with his words, always meaning everything he says to the letter. I suppose one could argue that, but I've also been told, repeatedly, that he's a chowderhead being rewarded with ice cream. And I'd have to assume that a business person who reads direct meaning and signals into out-of-context quotes from a ice cream loving chowder head is a moron.

Now, what that quote was great for is divisive media fodder. We lament how the media is trying to divide us. But when the media waves around a quote that confirms our worldview, we just go along? This seems very trusting of the media, by and large.

If we want to dwell on real policies, I can get behind that. But dwelling on low-context verbal burps from a person one thinks is an invalid, these are not the things "signals" are made of.
You would be correct if it was simply a one time, off the cuff statement. However this adminstration has been sending plenty of signals that they are hostile to fossil fuels. The biggest affect they have in thru the regulatory process where they are making it tough for companies to plan on future oil production.

I have not looked at it very closely of late, but the last time that we went through high gase prices, the oil companies profit margins actually decreased and were lower than most other business sectors. Record profits came from record high sales of their products, not a high profit margin.

How about a signal to the oil companies to pump more oil here, rather than beg OPEC for more?

Ending leases and cancelling pipelines are not good signals for the market. There is not much more to say on the topic.

If it were Trump he would have had several round table discussions with oil company reps plus appointing someone to head a task force to increase oil production

oh well come on 2024

We did too, because nobody was using (paying for) the first class seats. So there's that.

But now all of those seats are full ahead of time so there is no upgrade option. We just stay in premium economy, which I'm fine with.

I think this has a lot to do with it as well.

We have a serious mental health problem in this country, and handing out mind-altering pharmaceutical drugs like they are skittles probably isn't the answer.

This is a very understated point. The pharmaceuticals are drowning the population in entire classes of very addictive pills. For instance Benzodiazepines (Klonopin, Ativan, Xanax) were developed about 70 years ago to mentally numb and disable mental ward patients who were deemed beyond care in order for the medical staff to physically move them around easier. Nowadays both Klonopin and Xanax are two of the ten most prescribed medications nearly yearly. Both are prescribed with strict instructions for short term use only, yet most patients will use both for the rest of their life, primarily because they are very difficult to rehab from.

And that’s speaking for just the Benzos! Z-Drugs (Ambien), Painkillers (Percocets), Adderall, and antidepressants (Lexipro) are also abused, overprescribed, improperly mixed, sold second-hand, and worst of all, if their supply is interrupted, leaves its patients much more likely to try heroin, meth, and crack as substitutes for their next fix.

Several people here seem to keep missing the "we (the US) are going to be pumping more oil next year than any other time in our history" part.

The federal government (as in, part of the Biden administration) prepares these forecasts.  The oil companies are not listening to the politicians speeches.  90% of that is just lip service to their constituents.  The oil companies are reading the forecasts and planning accordingly.  Cancelling the leases means that plans that they had for drilling for oil 5 years from now have to be changed to move to different locations.  Yeah, that's annoying, but it's the "planning" phase of a project.  Nobody was laid off because at this point, these are just lines on paper.

According to the Interior Secretary, there are 9000 other permits for drilling that are approved and are currently not being used.
