63% Americans identified as Christians (2020 Pew Study). That number has been declining for decades (75% in 2015, 70.6% in 2014, 78% in 2012, 81.6% in 2001, and 85% in 1990).

29% of Americans identified as unaffiliated, atheist, or agnostic.

Meanwhile, violent crime in the United States has also been on a sharp decline during those exact periods.

The lowest crime rates in the world are Switzerland, Denmark, Norway, and Japan (the latter 3 have some of the most restrictive gun laws in the world).

Switzerland is 29% unaffiliated and 62% Christian.  Denmark is 74% Christian (only 4% regularly attend church, and only 19% said religion was an important part of life).  I could not find good data on their unaffiliated.  Norway is 18% unaffiliated and 71% Christian.  Japan is 62% irreligion and 1% Christian (obviously Christianity would be an outlier here).

Christianity is on the decline in all of those countries while unaffiliated is on the rise.  All those countries list at the top of the most happiest and healthiest countries in the world.

Venezuela, Papua New Guinea, and South Africa have the highest crime rates in the world.

Venezuela has the highest crime rate with 89% of it's population as Christian and 8% no religion.

Papua New Guinea is 96% Christian.

South Africa is 84% Christian and 10% irreligion.

It would seem that the safest and healthiest countries have lower Christian populations, that are also on the decline.  With unaffiliated being on the rise.

Now, I'm a teacher.  Apparently this guy just walked up into a random classroom.  What the fuck am I going to do about it?  Say you train me to be an expert marksman.  Say I have a gun in a safe place (which could only be in some sort of safe and NOT in any easy-to-access spot).  A random ass guy in body armor has suddnely entered my classroom while I'm kneeling down, helping a student with their writing.
WHAT IN THE FUCK AM I GOING TO DO?  I'm the only adult in the room, I'm dead first.  Sorry, this isn't a movie.  The formica tables I'd be tossing up as barricades as I slow-motion run to my gun aren't stopping any bullets.  Even if I'm carrying the gun on me, it's a pistol and this guy has an assault rifle, 6 of my students are murdered in front of me, and I'm supposed to go into action hero mode?!?
.
Anyone who says teachers should be armed and trained lives in an outright fantasy.  It's like a car accident - you don't see it coming.  I'd say half the time another adult enters my classroom in an ordinary situation does so without me knowing.....BECAUSE I'M FOCUSING ON MY JOB.
.
LIFE IS NOT AN ACTION MOVIE.  GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR ASS.
Parents: You need to make surprise visits to your child’s school. Walk all over the campus and see how long it takes for someone to stop you & question you. See how many doors are unlocked. This is bigger than a gun issue.

a semi automatic rifle wasn't the issue either

could have done as much damage with a lever action

must have had some decent training to get past the police

didn't just turn 18 and buy a couple guns

It is my understanding (which I admit most of what I have gleaned is from message boards today), he literally did just buy the guns right after his 18th birthday a week or two ago.  He may have had experience firing guns before, but he literally only could have a weeks worth of training using AR-15's (unless he had previously had access to them from some other source and that has not been reported yet).

Edit:  From the news I've been reading this hour, it does not appear that Police were initially involved.  After shooting his grandmother, he drove to the school.  A resource officer engaged him outside where he dropped an ammo bag and ran inside a back door.

it's not guns.
it's morality and mental health.

100%.

And most of the folks blaming guns are the same ones who applaud when Zelenksy handed out tens of thousands of submachine guns and ammo to civilians and also think it's better to spend $40 Billion U.S. taxpayer dollars we don't have to defend Ukraine rather than on our own safety here at home.

If this report is true, it's not a good look for the police:

There is something to be said for this, but that said, I am no longer a parent of a school age child (my daughter is 26 - she still presents to me like a school aged child). I don't want to get interrogated or arrested for trespass.

One news station tonight reported that the school district has its own police force, but the reporter was questioning how much training the school resource officer had compared to a regular police officer. I am sure there is more to come. The school district and local law enforcement have been very quiet. Reports, however, will eventually be made public.

The school districts with security issues already have it laid out so that you cannot enter campus without going in through the front office, and they have to buzz you in through a locked door.  A person could enter the office and hop the counter, though.
But there's no freely wandering onto campus.
.
Districts that don't care about safety or are in nicer areas may have it where you can enter the building and simply walk past the office.
.
Many have an on-campus cop.  They're a real police officer, or at least were when they requested the post or were assigned to it.  If they like it and get comfortable, I could see this person getting soft/bored/etc.  All they deal with is parents yelling at the office staff or the older kids who truly stopped giving a shit and go nuts acting out.
.
All of this, of course, is the illusion of safety.  A fence can be jumped.  A door can fail to close properly.  A simple counter can be hopped.

It was much easier to purchase firearms 50+ years ago including Colt’s AR15.  Yet there were relatively few mass shootings, Whitman in Austin in 1966 being the only one I can think of.  What has changed?

50 years ago people were committed to mental institutions. That is not how things work today. The 3 that I knew about near where I used to live have been torn down.

I don't have a solution though. Those places were hell holes. But something has to give on mental health, for sure. It's a huge problem.

I do have a question though.

Where did this 18 y/o kid get the money for the guns and ammo? He probably had to spend $1500-$2000 for what he had.

Doesn't matter since violent crime overall is down (lol) as Atheism is on the rise.

Honestly I am surprised that they are even covering this, since it was a hispanic crossdresser. You'd think it would get swept right under the Chicago gun violence/Islamic terrorism rug.
