When I was a kid, and probably today around here, any soft drink was called "a Coke".  If someone offered you "a Coke" and you said yes,  they reply "What kind?  Sprite?  Nehi Grape?  Mountain Dew?"

we never said soft drink

I grew up in soda country, then moved to a place some called it pop.

I don't think it's come up in a while. I guess I'm in coke country now, though it's also sort of Pepsi territory

Well, it's not lying.
You get a headache going through caffeine withdrawal, so perhaps the caffeine halts headaches, lol.  And if you're exhausted, the sugar rush may help for a short time.
And everything tastes better than what everyone drank back then - room-temp water (prob w/ lead in it).

We never said soft drink either but we also didn’t generically call all soda “Coke.”  We generically called it “pop.”  If I was over a friend’s house I might ask what kind of pop they had to drink.  A typical response would be, “Yeah, we have Coke, Pepsi, etc.” If I asked if they had Coke then I was asking specifically about Coke.  And a typical response might be, “No, but we have Pepsi, Sprite, etc”

For some reason, Coca Cola is pretty prominent around these parts.

Same up North. It was pop, but you just ordered what you wanted.

In Florida, you just order what you want. Of course, SW FL is mostly Midwest people.

Diet Pepsi is the most popular at restaurants and such, having supplanted Coke.

You must have, because there can be both, none, or one. In this case, both.

I've read some pretty serious medical commentary about how bad fructose is for our livers and other things.  I have tried to limit my intake as much as possible, and it's not very possible with a normal diet.  I rarely eat dessert and don't put sugar in coffee and don't drink soft drinks.

Fructose is probably not good for us in high levels, and the "High Fructose Corn Syrup" has about the same level as table sugar (sucrose).

Could you post all of your medical/health knowledge here, please.  I want to print it out and post it on my fridge.
