Critical race theory is a study in academia based on the concepts of systemic and institutional racism. Systemic racism refers to how the government has discriminated against Black, Indigenous and other people of color through unjust policies concerning housing, employment, criminal justice, education and more.”

The most succinct definition in there.

I think they could run Winnie the Pooh out there and beat the current admin. Soundly.
Could … could they do that? He seems more agreeable than most pols out there. Though you might have to convince him to wear pants.

Why is anyone against that teaching?  It's true.

OK, that is what we call anecdotal evidence, one dad was incensed about something.  This could be a problem, I'm far from an expert.  It does sound to me like the kind of thing that is a rare issue blown up into a major deal with some new law that probably is not enforceable, but sounds good.

You realize don’t you that Governor DeSantis did not start or offer this legislation. I followed it closely since it began and it began as parents being extremely vocal about what they heard their kids were learning in school so they went to their local legislators who wrote the legislation and Governor DeSantis signed it. That’s not anecdotal that’s real life. It’s called the government actually working to solve the problems that the people feel are their problems
Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.

I've seen my wife and her kids go through the immigration process and it's not fun at all.  There are some very screwy and unneeded steps in it, and it could be modernized in my view, particularly with the quotas.  But like Social Security, no politician will touch it beyond mouthing platitudes because "the other side" will demonize any proposal made.  SS has a number of simple fixes, but no one can touch it.  A lot of issues do, so politicians just ignore it beyond platitudes.

It reminds me of climate change though there they can at least throw money at it randomly and pretend.

I think it's true too - but the way it's being taught is not appropriate. The way it is being taught in many places is not good.

White kids are being taught they they are bad because they are white. Take a deep dive and you will find this to be true also.

Yes, the history is absolutely disgusting. There is no question about this.

The question is about how it is being taught - by people who like to re-write the history.

Read the 1619 Project if you find time.

OK, so it's not CRT exactly but HOW it is being taught that is the issue.  So, banning teaching CRT won't really do anything.

It's banning teaching real history and not addressing the actual problem.

They could go back to how it was taught when you, me and everyone else on this board (we're all old) were taught history. This is what DeSantis wants for his state.

Teachers are supposed to present facts, not editorials. This is what DeSantis wants for his state.

Nobody is opposed to teaching history - as ugly as a good bit of it is.

I've got a grandchild now - can't wait to see her Friday.

Do not want her anywhere near a teacher who goes down the 1619 road. About 250,000,000 people are with me on this.

MOST of what they report is factual.  MOST of what they report is what others have said, like theh "Russian disinformation" story.  They reported that some former intelligence types said it had all the hallmarks of Russian disinformation.

That is entirely true.  Those folks did say that.  Their report of the stock market averages are factual, the basketball score is factual, that somebody said something is factual.

Right now their headline is what Zelensky said, and that is factual.

I'm not saying I like CNN at all, I don't, but I am very wary of any news outlet.  They can present facts in such a way as to distort the actual meaning.
Yes, what they and other outlets report is mostly factual. It is the practice of alligning those facts and hiding others to support a narrative that comes into question. And I don't need a news organization to report what someone said, I can read that for myself. What they fail to do is to quesiton those someone's in an attempt to get to the heart of a story and to dig for the truth even when it goes against your beliefs that CNN, Fox, MSNBC and others fail to do.

Back in the 90s when I was still attending these things, we had mandatory "diversity training", a large part of which was to tell us whites were privileged and racist.  In one session it was so overt that a black coworker interrupted to say it wasn't true in our workplace.  That got things stirred up and the moderator lost control of the event.

The older hands would sit through this stuff quietly and get it over as quickly as possible, some of the newer employees took it more seriously and would "engage" until we told them to shut up.  Often the event would be planned for the entire day and we'd by out by 2 PM and go home.

Where would you read what someone said if they didn't report it?  It's really most of what gets reported.  It's easy to do, and they can pick and choose what they report to get viewers to click.

I don't see how a law can adjust how a topic is taught.  It would be so vaguely worded as to be useless and unenforceable.

It doesn't need to be a law. Just needs to be common sense - which is why some states are enacting laws. Far too many people have no common sense.

Why pass a law if it's not needed?
