I would say "influenced", not duped.  Germany in particular went off on their "Energiewend" or whatever it was that included closing their power reactors.  Then they couldn't develop their own NG resources.  LNG from the US was expensive.

Whoever paid to build Nord Stream II got hosed.  Germany is an object lesson on how NOT to approach climate change.

Maybe, if they thought the Russian money was to save the environment, or if the donations were third party and they didn't know, or didn't want to know.  It's not that easy, as you know, to get some organization up and running without funding.  You can have a Greta get attention, for a brief time, but she doesn't get anything done.

The Green party folks knew where the money was coming from. Everybody knew where the money was coming from.

Some may not have known, the middle manager types, but that's no excuse.

I don't see how you can title it being "duped" when everyone knew it was happening at the time, and had been happening for years and years, for over a decade.

They went in eyes wide open.  They just didn't think that becoming heavily reliant on energy from Putin's Russia was any big deal.

In many ways it's quite similar to how the US has become so heavily dependent on manufacturing, critical supply chain elements, and critical raw materials, coming from China.  We knew how heavily dependent we'd become, we just didn't see it as a big deal.

A lot of people-- people that make the most important decisions for the US corporations and government-- still don't understand that it's a big deal.
I find the idea of “dependence” in this context interesting. Mostly because I don’t totally know how real it is. Like, the price of “independence” would be enormous, with some spiraling impacts on cost of living, etc.

Finally found an enemy all Americans can oppose

I've been arguing for permanent DST for years.

Which is just nothing more than never moving our clocks twice a year again, and declaring that each time zone is one hour east of where it is now.

So instead of Eastern Time being GMT -5:00, it would become GMT -4:00, and Pacific Time would move from GMT -8:00 to GMT -7:00.

Are you talking about Europe/Russia dependence for energy, or the US/China dependence for all the other stuff?

If you're talking about the US, I'll point out that China is no longer even considered the lowest-cost manufacturing nation for the production of many of the goods that we've moved there over the past couple of decades. There are several other nations that can produce a lot of the same products at similar or lower cost, without the threat and the baggage of the CCP.

A shift couldn't happen overnight, but a slow move of critical manufacturing and supply chain from China to other low-cost nations, would not result in some kind of catastrophic impact to cost of living in the USA.

I'm all for DST being the thing. I would actually prefer Florida be in the Central time zone.

My Dad has always referred to Daylight Savings Time, and Daylight Wastings Time.  He'll be delighted with this prospect.
