My wife asked me about taking a train trip somewhere for nostalgia etc.  I checked a few AMTRAK prices, it's not competitive with any other mode of travel.  Maybe in Canada.

When is "season" over, generally?

It's hard to even get a dinner reservation these days. The great places are a MONTH or MORE out right now.

I mean, go home already.

The new Persian restaurant near us is packed, we got in for lunch, and it is very very good.  My bud went for dinner and said it was packed and way too noisy.  I was very impressed, and they have probably the prime location in the area.  But if you can't get in ...

I'm looking for some other nice places to dine now, we have some good ones, but nothing akin to the French place that closed.  For some reason, we have very few French bistros and restaurants in this city.  We have everything else in abundance, but few French.  Bistros can serve good food at a reasonable price in a casual environment, but I don't know of one.

The NE MARTA line used to be the Yellow Line, they changed it to the Gold line because so many Asians moved out that way.  Asians and Hispanics, it's reall like a foreign country in some respects, many signs are bilingual, if that.

Yeah, I just, for fun, looked up Irvine->San Francisco. I can get to the Irvine Amtak station in ~10 minutes, and I believe it's free parking there.

Surprisingly not as expensive as I would have thought--about $60 each way. That's pretty competitive with driving it alone--it's about 1 tank of gas for my Ford Flex, which is running low $70s range right now w/ Costco gas prices. Of course, my Flex is a 7-passenger vehicle, so scaling for more people is a huge savings if I'm not making the drive alone.

The downside, of course, is that it's a 12-hour trip. It's 6 hours in the car, and worst case maybe 7+ if you have to cross LA during rush hour. And that there aren't a lot of options each day for timing. The best is showing up in Irvine just before 6 AM and getting to SF at 6 PM, unless you want to do an overnight.

The other comparison is flying. I can fly for <$100 each way on Southwest, from Orange County to SFO, and they've got TONS of flights each day so there is major flexibility in the schedule. It's a 1 hour flight time, and I'd have to add 30 minutes to get to the airport and park, and arrive at SNA 1 hour before the flight leaves. Then if I want to get to downtown SF I'd have to hop on BART from SFO to downtown, which is probably another $15 and another 45 minutes. So actual full travel time is closer to 3 1/2 hours. But it sure beats 12.

The "high speed" rail would likely be much more expensive round-trip, and I don't think it'll come close to beating drive time.

Supposedly it was going to be SF to LA in 2 hrs 40 minutes, but nobody thinks it will actually achieve that for MANY reasons--some technical, some political, and some cost-based: https://www.latimes.com/local/california/la-me-bullet-train-speed-20180729-story.html

This is my first year seeing it.

In 2020 and 2021 Canada was not allowed here, and the New Yorkers were afraid to come.

The main reason is it won't be built beyond the current small segment.  They currently plan to have you take a slow train to Modesto, change trains, to the end of the line, and get on another slow train to LA.  It's beyond silly.  It was absurd when proposed.

It's a funny sentiment.

Those yankees keep many small businesses going down along the coast.

But please, hurry up and leave.

Yes, so that the permanents residents can start going back to those businesses.

Why Are Gas Prices Going Up? (caranddriver.com)
the short version: because we have a weak ineffective leader who no one around the world respects.

Travelers of the Great Loop, a circumnavigation of the eastern U.S., award the title to the expeditionists who accomplish the route more than once.

Boaters journey more than 5,000 miles through the Gulf of Mexico, the inland rivers, the Great Lakes, the Canadian Canals, the New York State Canals and the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. Depending on the route a cruiser makes, they will go through at least 15 U.S. states and a couple Canadian provinces.

Traditionally people spend about a year completing the route, moving in rhythm with the seasons. Boaters aim to be on the northern part of the loop during the summer months, the inland rivers in the fall, snowbird in Florida and spend the spring up the eastern portion of the route.
