Apparently up in our Bay Area offices, only Sr Director and higher warrant an office. Luckily I'm down here in SoCal.
Well it's only "figure of speech" lighter, in that chances are if you--like most people--pay for your gas with a little plastic card, then the account your $ is withdrawn from is smaller while your wallet remains the same weight.
tricky bastards stopped taking coins just so we wouldn't be able to take advantage of the better mileage from high octane gas.

$3.18 at my Costco.  $3.13 at the quickie mart down the block.

High octane gasoline actually has a bit less energy than regular gas.  For one thing, ethanol is a cheap octane enhancer, and it has a lot less energy than regular gasoline.  But ethanol aside, there is a slight difference because it has more branched hydrocarbons in it (premium).

The gas companies like to claim it has more detergent additives, but in reality it rarely does.  Costco sells top fuel gasoline which is a good type to use.  Borh grade have it.

My car recommends premium, but it runs fine on midgrade, I haven't tried regular in it.  Costco doesn't sell a midgrade.

Technically it probably "runs fine" on midgrade because your ECU is adjusting timing to compensate for the midgrade gas and avoid knocking... So your example would likely be a loss of power with midgrade relative to premium.

That's what you get for buying a fancy German hot hatch...

Yeah, no doubt, but if the loss of hp is not detectable ...  and it's not.

my car says I have to put 91 or higher. 99% of gas stations only have 87, 89, or 93. 93 is $5/gal here. Cost me $85 to fill up a sedan. I'm gonna go broke soon.

B.R.A.D. Is correct. Unfortunately for me I don’t have an engine that’s not high compression.  X3m competition, SQ8 ECU tuned to adapt to up to 104 octane, RS five which is ECU tune to adapt up to 104 octane, and newly arriving Ford GT500 which requires 93 octane
Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.

when I was a kid my family had a 61 Ford Galaxy that had the habit of dieseling

when the ignition was turned off

It really impressed my friends

we would do a little dance when it would do it

It's quite obvious you should get an electric car.

Carbs were problems, often as not.  FI has really saved the ICE.

Starting your car used to be a bit of an adventure, each car seemed to have its own quirks when it was cold.

If you flooded the carb, the correct technique was to floor the gas pedal while starting which was counterintuitive.

I use 93. Can't find 91 anywhere really.

$4.65 at last fill.

$2.35 a year ago.
