If you're still working, I think you should be buying long term.  It's after retirement that things change.  I recall in 2008-9 I just figured it meant another few years on the job.  Now, a real drop would be painful if I wasn't already heavy in cash.  I try and keep 6-7 years very liquid.

Buy low sell high.

That's never been my strategy, but I get that some like to play the market. I'm a long haul guy, and that is the reason I could retire right now (or 5 years ago) if I wanted to.

Well, that and my business. That's been berry berry good to me.

Ah, so you prefer to buy high and sell low?

Bold strategy, Cotten... ;)

I meant that I don't try to play the market. I buy what makes sense to me, as a long-term hold.

I know, just kidding.

Plenty of people think they can play the market.  The truth is, it's just not possible, and the world is littered with quant guys who thought they knew how, and failed.

I'm invested heavily in the things I know well, as viable companies with viable products and long-term thinking.  I've got a decent chunk of Apple from back when, wish I had more.  I own quite a few tech stocks because I'm familiar with it.  Those have all done well long-term for me, while suffering some jaw-dropping short term losses at times.  I'm mostly invested for retirement purposes so can think long-term.

Real estate's been my best investment by far.  But I've been very lucky with the timing of those investments, I couldn't do the same thing in today's market.

Gas $4.69/gal today at Costco... $5.45 at the Arco I passed on the way there...

That's for 87 octane.

BTW this would be a good time to highlight that unless you have a high-compression engine that the auto's manual says you should use a higher grade gas, there is ABSOLUTELY NO ADVANTAGE to running a higher octane than your engine is designed for. It's not better. It won't give you more power. It won't clean your engine. All it will do is lighten your wallet.
