the raft of sanctions on oligarchs announced by President Joe Biden this week in response to the invasion of Ukraine may do little to dim the jet-setting lifestyles of Russia’s ultra-rich and infamous – much less force a withdrawal of tanks and troops.

U.S. sanctions target Russian President Vladmir Putin and a handful of individuals believed to be among his closest security advisers, including Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. But the list is just as notable for who isn’t on it — most of the top names from Forbes’ list of the richest Russians whose multi-billion-dollar fortunes are now largely intertwined with the West, from investments in Silicon Valley start-ups to British Premier League soccer teams.

Citing the concerns of European allies, the U.S. also didn’t impose what was seen as the harshest punishment at its disposal, banning Russia from SWIFT, the international financial system that banks use to move money around the world.

much of the wealth of Russia’s richest isn’t held in the sanctioned Russian banks. Putin and the oligarchs aligned with him have had decades to stash assets overseas, much of it hidden in ways specifically designed to avoid sanctions.

Though the Kremlin officially reports Putin’s income at $131,900 annually, the Russian president is believed to benefit from many billions in cash and overseas assets held by trusted friends and relatives, many of whom are from his home city of St. Petersburg.

A 2017 study of Russian oligarchs published by the U.S.-based National Economic Bureau estimated that as much as $800 billion is held by wealthy Russians in the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Cyprus, and similar offshore banking centers. That vast fortune, held by a few hundred ultra-rich individuals, is roughly equal to the wealth of the entire rest of the Russian population of 144 million people.

Putin may lose even if he takes over Ukraine.  He would "have":

Control of a damaged country with a hostile population very difficult to control
Enmity from the West for a long time
A damaged military, and one effectively destroyed in a former ally
Sanctions, to the extent that hurts
Discord in Russia
Hopefully, motivation for Germany to really change its energy policies
Maybe even the US would as well

Remarks by Vice President Harris in Press Gaggle | The White House

Q    But if Putin has made up his mind, do you feel that this threat that has been looming is really going to deter him?

THE VICE PRESIDENT:  Absolut- — we strongly believe — and remember also that the sanctions are a product not only of our perspective as the United States but a shared perspective among our Allies.  And the Allied relationship is such that we have agreed that the deterrence effect of these sanctions is still a meaningful one, especially because — remember, also — we still sincerely hope that there is a diplomatic path out of this moment.

And within the context then of the fact that that window is still opening, altho- — open, although it is absolutely narrowing — but within the context of a diplomatic path still being open, the deterrence effect, we believe, has merit.

I don't have a preference for political party, I largely disagree with the majority of policies from both of them at this point, but do you remember how the press used to lampoon and skewer George W whenever he'd day something that sounded stupid?  And Dan Quayle?

w had an entire cartoon tv show dedicated to poke fun at his gaffs. lil' bush. was actually fairly funny, if i remember correct.

3 of the last 4 have had several instances of speaking gaffs. obama, as much as i might disagree with him, was very well spoken and i don't remember any major ones from him.

Horns should be very good this year, Omaha-worthy once again for sure and honestly anything less would be disappointing.  I don't know much about your Tide beisbolers but I watch a lot of college baseball and most D1 teams from the South and West have at least one really good arm that can beat an opponent on the right day, so Alabama taking one wouldn't surprise me at all.

It's going to be really cold for the series.  Like, currently 39 degrees in Austin and it will only get cooler into evening (game just started at 4:30).  And tomorrow high of 41 but drizzly.  Sunday should be better, high in the upper 50s and partly sunny.

I might make it out on Sunday, I'm definitely not going to be there today or tomorrow because I really, REALLY hate the cold.
was a good game. i listened to some on my way home. seemed to be a pitchers duel at the time, and later half of game stats suggest it was all game. the horns dude was hitting tight spots in the corners its sounded like from radio.

bama went 0-10 with runners in score position. can't do that against most teams and expect to win, much less an omaha contender like horns.

here's to a good g2 and 3, and maybe split those. cheers:singing:
