I wish them well.  I think things in Kyiv are about to get a whole lot worse.
I think the shrinking of the world has made a lot of things that were actually far away "feel" close, but at the same time, things that are actually close feel very far away.  I remember a couple years ago, when there was that mass shooting at the synagogue in Pittsburgh, it didn't hit any closer to home than any other one in America.  I think another side of that is always feeling safe because while things a half world away are an arms length away, things that are right outside your door feel the same.

Hell, Louis CK has his issues right now, but I dont think he NEEDS the work.  And he is doing a show in Kiev tonight

So- you were pretty adamant this invasion wasn’t happening?
yeah for two main reasons. one- US intelligence and media quoting "anonymous intelligence" sources has like zero credibility in my eyes- and they've earned that. turns out they were finally right about something- but even a broken clock is right twice in a day. and more importantly; two- i simply did not think Putin was that stupid to actually pull the trigger on a full scale invasion that would be more harmful than beneficial to him and his country and would seriously alienate the few allies he had in Europe are already turning on him, Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Czech President Milos Zeman who both have know come out to strongly rebuke Putin and bitterly condemn his war of aggression.

Finish Prime Minister Sanna Marin on Thursday said Russia’s invasion of Ukraine will change the debate around NATO membership within her country.
"Finland is not currently facing an immediate military threat, but it is also now clear that the debate on NATO membership in Finland will change," Marin said, YLE News
YLE News reported.

Finland has been debating for months whether the country should apply for NATO membership, with Marin saying it would require broad support for the country to move forward with an application.

Finland and Sweden, who are both not officially members of NATO, will be at a summit the alliance will host Friday.

1. Sanctions will hurt the West, too. “It’s very hard to get countries to sign up for truly tough sanctions against Russia,” Michael Crowley, who covers the State Department for The Times, told me. “It comes at a cost to their own economies.”

Freezing out Russian banks could create problems for the global financial system. Hurting Russia’s energy industry would increase prices when inflation is already high and angering many Western workers. The effects would often be largest in the E.U., which may explain why European officials have often been more dovish on sanctions than American or British officials.
(Here’s an explainer about why the U.S. cannot unilaterally cut off Russia from the SWIFT financial network — and why some Europeans have reservations.)
“The European Union is Russia’s largest trading partner, accounting for 37 percent of its global trade in 2020, and receives a third of its energy from Russia,” my colleague Patricia Cohen wrote. “The flip side of mutual interest is mutual pain.” Matina Stevis-Gridneff, The Times’s Brussels bureau chief, adds: “The reality is that many of the tougher sanctions are considered too onerous for Europe.”
One unknown is whether the ugly reality of war in Ukraine — as opposed to merely the prospect of it — will make Western leaders and citizens more willing to accept economic costs. If not, Putin’s gamble may have succeeded, which autocrats elsewhere will no doubt notice.

Finland and Sweden would be admitted almost instantaneously.

I was against the Baltics being admitted, but Finland would be a useful addition I think, given the Baltics are now in.  There are some countries I would prefer not being included but it's a done deal.

doesn't seem to me that NATO does much regardless of membership

adding or subtracting would make much difference?

I guess we won't really know unless/until an actual NATO member is attacked and Article V is invoked.

Good point. Also- interesting to think about the interpretation of what constitutes an “attack “ and who would actually invoke article 5.  Does a cyber attack count- for example?
