  • ISW cannot confirm reports of any Russian amphibious landings in Odesa or Mariupol. Initial reports of such landings appear to be incorrect. Russia may wait until forces from Crimea have secured crossings over the Dnipro River before attempting to seize Odesa by air and sea.

ok I'll ask it in a different way

If Russia is still selling oil to the world even if its different buyers the world supply of oil has not changed

so how does this affect the price

the only way price would be affected is if theres less oil on the market

if Russia continues to supply oil to the market the over all supply will remain unchanged so why is price affected
I guess it's all hypothetical at the moment because not sure they'll sanction Russian oil. If there are sanctions though, EU/UK/Japan/South Korea buys way too much of Russia's oil for there not to be a huge affect if it's taken off the table and these countries cannot purchase it. Not sure China or other countries will be able to make up the difference even if buying at a discount.

It would limit the total supply of oil in the world market. Russia is the worlds 2nd largest producer of oil and 2nd largest exporter of oil. They are a major player in the oil trade.

You could probably have the Saudis crank up production to level 20 and increase supply- but they won't- Biden has started a beef with the leader of that country and the guy hates Biden's f***king guts.

EU imports nearly 30% of their oil from Russia. Can China really take a bulk of that 30% - even at a discount? The Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Italy, Finland, and Slovakia buy a ton of their oil from Russia.

And if Russia doesn't have as many buyers buying as much oil, they'll have to decrease production which would also decrease world supply. And if they have to keep selling at massive discounts- it could become too expensive for them to keep producing the oil.

if it comes to that and the price of oil increases then other countries namely Saudi Arabia would probably fill the void unless of course they stop liking money

US/EU and it's allies probably won't sanction Russian oil imo. EU needs that oil and last thing Biden needs is higher energy prices leading to more inflation. He's already getting his ass burned up domestically because of this. He doesn't need nor want more of it.

Oil is a finite resource- can't just produce it unendingly and forever. And in many cases it's expensive to produce. Not exactly like there are a lot of major high volume producers in the world and then there are even fewer major high volume low cost producers. Not like Russia can just be shut out and then someone else just jumps up to take their place. Have to have the reserves and the ability to produce- which not many countries do. Saudi's win there no matter what, they have the 2nd most proven oil reserves in the world and their production costs are the lowest in the world. They just print money when cost of oil is higher because their cost of production is so low. Venezuela has a little bit more proven oil reserves than the Saudi's, but Venezuelans cost to produce that oil is among the highest in the world.

Remember, when news sources start quoting "oil prices", they're not quoting the price of oil today... They're quoting the price of futures contracts for delivery of future oil.

It doesn't require scarcity for the price of a futures contract to go up--it can simply require the fear of future scarcity.

If I'm a Gulf Coast refinery trying to secure my Apr '22 supply of oil, and I'm afraid that the US will put sanctions on Russian oil making it illegal for me to acquire it, it means that all other domestic refiners will be stuck bidding on oil NOT from Russia--which might lead to those prices being bid up to secure supply.

As a refiner, you could wait and hope that sanctions aren't introduced, and then take advantage of price drops on Russian oil (which nobody thought they could buy so they already secured other sources). Or perhaps that OPEC will boost production and new oil delivery contracts will show up and be cheaper than today's price for April delivery. But if you make the wrong decision you might not get oil at all, and then you're in trouble.

Dumbest post....ever?

A - no amount of armed citizens is going to hold off a 21st-century foreign power from taking over
B - the argument for armed citizens is to defend against it's own tyrannical government

Putin has been pretty clear that he wants to topple the existing government, and his military actions thus far are completely consistent with that.

He says he doesn't intend to occupy it.  But he's going to install a puppet government which will result in Ukraine effectively becoming a Russian satellite state once again, so if the Ukrainians truly want to govern themselves, it'll be a long, ongoing insurgency.

I wish them well.  I think things in Kyiv are about to get a whole lot worse.
