You guys realize that modern Jeeps aren't the same as 1940s Army jeeps, right? :)

Sure, the one in our garage is quite largish and pretty fancy and of course enclosed.  Are Jeeps any better at off roading than some equivalent vehicle designed for the same purpose?

I know most SUVs are really station wagons with a higher stance and every convenience known to man and probably AWD.  I saw a Jetta station wagon at Costco yesterday and mentioned to my wife that it was a nice design, if they had had a GTI version I might have gone for it, but they discontinued the model of course.  Cadillac actually built some CTS-V station wagons with MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS back when.  They were insane.

Insane? Good/bad/ugly?My mechanic buddy and the on line expert do not recommend VWs.Having had 2 - I've always had problems and the expense that goes with fixing them, even when parts were reasonable. They were fun to drive though so if you don't mind that go for it. I've had 3 Toyota's,under carraige rust got one after 16 yrs,an SUV got another that was 12 yrs old, the 3rd is a 2010 in my garage.

so that new electric GMC Hummer looks pretty bad ass. Why go with GMC badge and not just Hummer? Oh, and it's going to be pretty expensive, $109k base price according to the google. When GM last made the H2 Hummer back in 2009 I want to say the base price was around $58k. Almost doubled in price in only 12-13 years. Bidenflation! JKJK. :)

bidenflation or not, autos are just stupid expensive right now. bought my wife's van a couple years ago used, and it's worth about 1.5 time today vs what i paid 2+ years ago. i'd love to cash in on that, but i'd be dropping it right back into another over inflated car.

also, that hummer looks good, but it looks more akin to an h1 than an h2. much bigger and heavier than an h2 was, about the same if not slightly more than an h1 was.

well, we deserve this mess to be frank. this is what can happen when you give up your entire supply chain, manufacturing base, and rare earth mineral mining completely up to China. US used to control about 99% of rare earth mineral mining in the world. China now controls around 95%.

if we had a functioning government none of this would have ever happened.

I like the SUV version a lot better than the pick up version. Think it looks way better imo.

Jeeps are typically better at off-roading "out of the box" than most other SUV-type vehicles, particularly the Wrangler (built for off-roading) and the Gladiator (Wrangler with a truck bed), and the Grand Cherokee. I understand that if you go full out with a Range Rover or a Toyota Land Cruiser, you're in good shape as well.

The Grand Cherokee, Range Rover, Land Cruiser are all more "overlander" vehicles, meaning that they're more capable of competent behavior in some dicey areas, but they're not really designed for hardcore rock-crawling use.

Then you've got vehicles that are more akin to Wrangler competitors, like the Toyota FJ Cruiser and the revamped Ford Bronco, which likewise are good "out of the box" off-roaders. They're targeting the off-road market, with more aggressive approach, breakover, and departure angles in their designs, like the Wrangler.

That said, it's more a decision than a fundamental capability. The recipe to build a competent off-roader isn't rocket science. Jeep aims out of the box with a little more ground clearance, 4WD, and beefier suspension components to target the off-road market. Nearly any 4WD pickup truck or true 4WD SUV can be just as capable off-road as a stock Jeep with light mods.

So, in branzino news, my wife "recommended" I cook it in the oven instead of cast iron, so I did.  The fish was good, I think any method would make tasty branzino.  My red pepper sauce needs some work though I liked it, she didn't.  Our guest said he liked it but you never know.  The fish come head on and cleaned but it's all there.  I think next time I would go ahead of filet them and get rid of the bones as much as possible and probably cast iron it.  For $15 it fed three.

I had the Chateau St. Michelle Indian Wells chardonnay with it.  That is pretty good for the money, about $11 here by the case.

big big fan of the new broncos (non-sport versions). 1988 bronco eddie bauer edition was my first vehicle. loved that thing. i'd still have it if i hadn't run into a financial bind about 20 years ago.

i'd get one now except they're either in too bad shape that i don't want to fix up, or in nice shape but more than i can spend on a toy right now.

already decided the new bronco is likely my next new vehicle. figured i'd give them a few years to work out the kinks in the new engines and transmissions before committing though.
