Trump says China 'absolutely' going after Taiwan after Russia-Ukraine 'disaster'

Trump described China's Xi Jinping, Russia's Vladimir Putin as 'twin sisters'

Have to love this guys flair for the dramatic....calling these jerkoff dictators twin sisters is actually pretty funny. I do think he's wrong however. US might actually go to war with China over Taiwan, and I think China knows this.

Why do you keep derailing yourself with irrelevance and whataboutism nonsense?  I don't think anyone here is asserting that the US necessarily should become involved in it. Some of us are saying Europe absolutely must worry about it.

This is the "In Other News" thread.  We talk about news here.  An ongoing invasion of one country by another is news, whether you like it or not.  If you don't want to discuss it, then don't.  It's just that easy.

agree with this. if china is planning on going after taiwan, they're either doing the most stealthy build up ever, or doing a terrible job of it. that won't be a "just wait till ground is hard enough" decision like ukraine. taiwan doesn't have easy access for troops on ground, either. very limited on where a ground assault will happen. will make d-day look pedestrian.
not to mention the us has 3 carrier strike groups pacific off coast of taiwan/philippines, another in japan, and another near hawaii (mid pacific, hard to tell). for comparison, there's only 1 near europe (mediteranean sea). https://news.usni.org/2022/02/07/usni-news-fleet-and-marine-tracker-feb-7-2022

I might just be overly optimistic, but I don't see China making open military moves for an invasion of Taiwan.  There would be so much global blowback, including and especially the possibility of actual military action from the US.

The Taiwan Strait is a B^&*( for China.  Aside from the potential of US carrier groups, there are subs that could wreck mayhem on supply ships supporting the invasion.  And subs could drop mines.  Some modern mines have active homing and detonate under the keel at some depth breaking the back of the target.  Taiwan should have some cheaper electric boats that can mine the straits.  Electric boats are very quiet and tough to detect without active sonar.

And of course the neat thing about a sub attack is that it is plausibly deniable.

I would be hesitant to order out carrier groups into range of Chinese land based bombers.

Anyway, I think China is content to play the LOONNNGGGG game more than Putin is.

Invading Taiwan any time soon would be very messy, and fraught with perils galore, and gain China rather little short term.  Meanwhile they create islands in the South China Sea and fortify them as prelude for economic development (oil probably and other things).  They can "invest" in Africa for the same reasons and gradually develop a Sphere of Influence for their Own Prosperity.  They COULD also delve into making a ton of consumer goods for the massive US market and run a huge balance of trade surplus with us, that too would be very clever, and it might even happen someday.

Probably not, we can make our own toys.

I have to say that the online social media sparring is a new part of the prelude to warfare that I find fairly entertaining.

I wonder how a vehicle of that ilk actually drives on a normal road, not very good I imagine.

There is a Jeep in the garage here that shows up with a lot of mud on it at times.  Other than some normal looking nonstock wheels, it's not lifted, he has fun with it it seems.

Dallas and Houston lead, which makes sense, and then MYC make the top five, which doesn't except it's large.

Atlanta cracks top 5 metros for most development over past decade | Urbanize Atlanta

surprised nashiville isn't on there. have family there and they are growing and building like crazy. at one point in last few years, was fastest growing city in us, population wise. though it is still relatively small compared to those others listed.
