The Canadian courts are still in full regular operation.  Trudeau is subject to their decisions, and also the decisions of his party in Parliament, and eventually the voters.

Dictators don't have those sorts of restraints.  They get to dictate.  Was there some part of said video above where the police pointed a gun at an arrestee?

I quickly scanned it, I saw the horse incident.  Police everywhere use horses for crowd control at times, and at times things happen.  Horses are large and powerful animals.
where is the massive eye roll emoji when you need it?

I believe what they wanted was for the government to lift the vaccine mandates and the vaccine passports. Passports were always a terrible idea- we don't really have those in the US and I believe if the federal government tried a nationwide passport there would be outright war in the streets- not peaceful protests by truckers like in Canada- which is probably why they never happened here.

As far the vaccine mandates- the science is in. The vaccines will not stop transmission, so to me there is really no point in having a vaccine mandate. In most if not all cases it will provide protection from serious illness/hospitalization/death but it won't prevent transmission or reinfection. Doesn't matter how many vaccines or boosters you get- you will get covid. All of us. If the mandates were about stopping the spread- well they don't stop the spread so I don't see much use for mandates. Get the protection if you want it, don't get it if you don't want it.
This is where I'm at. I have a few "friends" who won't associate with unvaxed people. Which is why I will not divulge my status to them. I've got way too many better friends anyway, so I don't need to see them anymore. Winning is good.

Anyway, I no longer care if people get vaccinated or not.

Yeah I know some people who won't associate with the unvaxed either, and it's for purely vindictive spiteful reasons, although they try to veil it as concerns over public health.

I, too, have no real use for people like that.  They just want to feel elite.  I've got your elite right here, pal.

The vaccines will reduce transmission.  Nothing will stop it.  Nobody ever claimed it would.

An imperfect qualified measure can still be of value.

I hope the heart problems seen in folks who caught Delta are not as prevalent with Omicron.

So, Putin is playing it cagey, as expected.  He recognizes those breakaway regions and the apply to be part of Russia.

Crimea all over again, and no overt use of military force unless Ukraine starts it.  I think Putin is taking a long view here.

There are significant potential heart problems associated with infection from nearly all viruses, this is nothing unique to COVID.

I agree that it would be nice if it were minimal in Omicron compared to Delta or any other previous strain.

The heart problem study I cited looked scary to me, it was quite bad, but during Delta.

. Yelp data was reporting that 60% of the restaurants that closed down temporarily during the pandemic are now closed forever.
You keep saying this. Can you provide a cite?

I ask because I live in California, arguably one of the strictest states when it comes to COVID restrictions. And anecdotally, restaurants seem to be doing fine here. I can count a few closures here and there, but 60%--even 60% of independents--doesn't jive with what I see on the ground.

Here in Houston I dont think there was anywhere near that number that remained closed

Hereabouts, nearly all restaurants closed down initially, and completely.  Most reopened after a couple weeks takeout only.  And the vast majority survived, I'd guesstimate 94%, meaning 6% went under.

Several of my favorite iconic longtime restaurants in Austin closed, and it sucked.  But I'd estimate at least 90% reopened and survived.

The ones that can't do take out were especially hard hit, but I can think of two here that didn't reopen, our of 100+.

Make that three, a Mexicanish place closed up too.  But Chipotle you know, they are like the egg lobby.
