Heh. It means they’re not law enforcement. They’re what? Regulation enforcement?

Well, if you break a regulatory rule, you can of course be fined, a lot.  Congress has chosen to vest these agencies with "police powers".  Congress would have no idea, no good ideas, about how to regulate safe workplaces for example.  (OSHA might not either in some cases.)

(TBF, I preferred the old politics rules, but the world changes and we must adapt)

We found that they were inevitably spilling over into discussions, and so we've kind of tried to limit it to just one thread-- this one.  It hasn't been perfect but I think it's a little better than watching it pop up all over.

Yeah. I remember. And the COVID thing put a lot of stress on it. Still, the days when more nakedly political posts were zapped was nice, at least to me.

but I understand I am a small constituency and the will of the group carries forth.

In general I agree, but this thread specifically is all over the place.  A lot of times it's nothing more than "in other news" but then current events tend to lead to political discussions.  Drawing the line is tough so in this thread we really don't.

Of course, the same principle can be applied to posts or specific posters.  If you know you're not going to like it or agree with it, then you can always just ignore the words and move on.

I do have to admit there are certain posters that I know will post something I dont agree with but I just am unable to not click on it just out of curiosity but its still my choice

I look at this thread like reading the front page of a newspaper meaning I scan for what is interesting to me and skip the rest

now if we could somehow keep CD from posting mile long posts about things like how fast a horse walks we will be accomplishing something

I guess I'd start by pointing out, you don't seem all that interested in Big Ten sports. Yet you are on a Big Ten message board, so things can clearly be more complicated.

And as utee said, this is a catchall. It frankly has lots of interesting things. And I think some policy discussion is good and healthy. But mixed in there is a lot of low-grade political yogurt slinging, the kind we used to have little of. If the thread was just the slinging, I'd ignore like Area 51 down there.

(And there's something just wired into human nature that once we start throwing the fiery stuff around, we just feed it more fire. At least when we're arguing about if Jim Tressell's tenure was good enough, it seems like it can only get so ugly. And the way it works is the temptation isn't to calm it down, but just throw more fuel in there. Not like I've not done it at times, and not like my first instinct, as is most folks' first instinct, is to fire back)

This area has gotten me a LOT more interested in B1G football, I feel like I'm a better fan, I'll watch Purdue play NW and have some vague notion of who is what.
