Some diplomats and other leaders gathered in Munich had broached the idea that Putin could opt to dig in for a long siege with everything short of ordering troops over the border — cyberattacks, assassinations, coup plots, cutting off trade — in hopes of toppling the Ukrainian government without triggering sanctions, reported David Sanger of The New York Times. Russia’s enthusiasm today for sudden nuclear exercises is perhaps an example.

This is what I've thought it the most likely scenario going forward.  It's better than one alternative.

Well sure, it's what Putin's already been doing for the past 8 years.

The question is, why spend all the money for this recent large military build-up along the Ukrainian border at all?  Clearly he's pushing for something different, something new.  What's his goal?

Negotiating leverage, and I'm not sure this really is a "massive buildup", it is a buildup, but as you note he's had tens of thousands of troops stationed near Ukraine for years.  Perhaps he wanted to get them noticed by moving 20,000 or so to a forward position.  They have to be somewhere, so the expense is in building quarters for them nearer Ukraine.  So, it's a gambit, and also provides him with a credible threat to invade, which probably is in the back of his mind.

He could well claim ethnic Russians in Donbass are being persecuted and move into that region.

London’s smallest microflat up for sale at £50,000 for 7 square metres | London | The Guardian

London is one of the most expensive places I've ever been to. Oslo probably the most. Lot of people in London and not much land left.

I hear Singapore is ultra expensive, I've never been, and I'd guess Tokyo is up there.

He's already claimed this.  If he "moves in" any more than he already has by providing Russian backing to separatist rebels, it's an overt act of war and an invasion of a sovereign nation.  And it will be treated as such by the other sovereign nations nearby.

The Ukraine-Polish-UK announcement earlier this week is essentially a line drawn in the sand.  Ukraine doesn't have NATO affiliation, but the UK has officially positioned them as a Western ally and although they may not be what they once were, but the RAF is more than capable of establishing a no-fly zone over much of Ukraine and the RN is capable of neutralizing Russian naval forces.

Jesus F'n Christ the conspiracy theories and propaganda of the US state department/"intelligence community", and the dipshit President has no limits. It's pretty clear the US wants a war. And shame on the completely useless worthless mainstream media which just parrots and repeats their lies uncritically, wholly unchecked with zero pushback. The fourth estate has completely collapsed. And it happened a long time ago, not like it's anything new. They are just mouth pieces for the powerful. Any dictator would be jealous of the obedience and compliance of the US media.

Might be "our" Merchants of War pushing an agenda to raise more profit ya know since all that equipment was "mysteriously abandoned in an a contrived emergency" - follow the money - who owns mass media? I hate those shit berries. They weave their reputations into a parallel with that of those that have served and sacrificed to slide their narrative thru that they are there for the country while greasing the palms of those who will push thru their windfalls. They perhaps more than anyone have bankrupted the once flourishing robust economy

I do not think they do, at all, either of these, either currently or over the next year.

I bet the RN has almost no naval forces in or near the Baltic and would struggle to maintain much of anything there on a war footing.  It's the Russian's backyard, and they could deploy ground based antiship missiles with ease, aside from Backfires and whatnot.

UK is America's lapdog. They are a toothless, worthless peon now. Our little pet dogs really. Kinda sad they went from the worlds greatest power to America's greatest bitch.

Russia has nearly 10x the active military personnel and nearly 25x the reserve military personnel. UK don't want no war with Russia. They are bluffing.

Our merchants of war are opportunistic assholes but they're not the ones that chose to escalate and increase the levels of troops stationed along the border of the Ukraine.   They didn't somehow force Putin to do this.

Unless you're suggesting that the American war hawks are working in conjunction with Putin?  It's an interesting theory but not sure there's much chance of it being real.
