talking about 1/6 protesters still in jail with no trial in sight
I'd say they are more rioters or even violent rioters or trespassing rioters or property destroyers- moreso than protestors or even insurrectionists....but your point stands. Federal gov't is being pretty awful and abusing it's power and throwing the book and then some at most of these idiots. It's not a good look.

Revealed: majority of people charged in Capitol attack aren’t in jail | US Capitol attack | The Guardian

At least 70% of people charged in the Capitol riot have been released as they wait for trial, according to a Guardian analysis.

That high pre-trial release rate stands in stark contrast with the usual detention rates in the federal system, where only 25% of defendants nationwide are typically released before their trial.

I read that folks charged with Federal crimes rarely get bail, and the 1/6 protesters got bail over twice as frequently as the average.
maybe, but a lot of the sentences were pretty god damn extreme. the punishment needs to fit the crime. take the QAnon Shaman guy Jacob Chansley - prosecutors were trying to give him 51 months - he was sentenced to 41 months - nearly 3.5 years in a federal prison.

DoJ admitted in court that Chansley did not commit any violence towards anyone - yet they had him locked away in solitary confinement for 10 months - a judge denied him bail 3 times-  prosecutors tried to get a sentence of 51 months - and ultimately was sentenced to 41 months (3.5 years) in federal prison.

What's the average time-to-trial for defendants in the federal system?

and call me naive, but aren't most federal charges a lot more serious than a bunch of jerk off rioters trespassing on and smashing gov't property windows and doors?

like, don't the feds typically go after and arrest the heavy hitter criminals? crime bosses, gang members, drug cartels, drug dealers, serial killers, serial rapists, and other grade A psychopaths.

https://www.uscourts.gov/statistics/table/na/federal-court-management-statistics/2021/09/30-3

depends on district, but at a glimpse seems to be somewhere between 8-24 months, with a median around 13-15ish. that's from filing to disposition. from the definitions section, for criminal trials it's from indictment to a not guilty verdict or sentencing if guilty. given that vast majority of trials are 3-5 days or less and that sentencing is typically done within 3 months, you could maybe knock off a month or so on average.

edit: also like to point out, most of them weren't arrested until late feb at the earliest. and a large % weren't until the summer. so we haven't yet made it to the 12-13-ish months yet for vast majority of them.

it wasn't just some gov storage building or warehouse. it was the capitol building with sitting congressmen and women in the middle of performing one of the most important aspects of our government.

besides, most that just went in a walked around are being given light sentences (criminal trespassing with probation or something). as of last month, median jail time was 45 days, with 25% serving no jail time. the big sentences are coming for those that either attacked police or had obvious intent to harm.
