Yes, it's a loaded term, but it's also a broad term that appears to me to be accurate.  And I know full well it's used as a political term.

One side tries to minimize the Jan 6 events and the other side tries to hype it.  That should not be a surprise.

I'd like to just meet in the middle and call it for what it was. That'd be nice.

INSURRECTION. A rebellion of citizens or subjects of a country against its government.
    2. The Constitution of the United States, art. 1, s. 8. gives power to congress " to provide for calling forth the militia to execute the laws of the Union, suppress insurrections, and repel invasions."
    3. By the act of Congress of the 28th of February, 1795, 1 Story's L. U. S. 389, it is provided: Sec. 1. That whenever the United States shall be invaded, or be in imminent danger of invasion, from any foreign nation or Indian tribe, it shall be lawful for the president of the United States to call forth such number, of the militia of the state, or states, most convenient to the place of danger, or scene of action, as he may judge necessary to repel such invasion, and to issue his orders, for that purpose, to such officer or officers of the militia as be shall think proper. And in case of an insurrection in any state, against the government thereof, it shall be lawful for the president of the United States, on application of the legislature of such state, or of the executive, (when the legislature cannot be convened,) to call forth such number of the militia of any other state or states, as may be applied for, as he may judge sufficient to suppress such insurrection.
4.-2 That, whenever the laws of the United States shall be opposed, or the execution thereof obstructed, in any state, by combinations too powerful to be suppressed by the ordinary course of judicial proceedings, or by the powers vested in the marshals by this act, it shall be lawful for the president of the United States to call forth the militia of such state, or of any other state or states, as may be necessary to suppress such combinations, and to cause the laws to be duly executed; and the use of militia so to be called forth may be continued, if necessary, until the expiration of thirty days after the commencement of the then next session of congress.
5.-3. That whenever it may be necessary, in the judgment of the president, to use the military force hereby directed to be called forth, the president shall forthwith, by proclamation, command such insurgents to [font=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif

One man’s social justice is another man’s insurrection.

Bail them out of jail for arson and assault, or investigate them with all the full power of the US Government for over a year, for just being present.

Depends on your party I suppose.

I don't expect that from partisans.  One side will minimize and the other dramatize every time.

The truth often is in the middle.

Impossible, because of:

I think that’s the biggest problem in this country right now. We’ve become a nation of partisan hacks who choose party loyalty over figuring out the truth.

Vote blue no matter what. Vote red til your dead. Never seen such bad tribalism in this country. Maybe I’m way wrong. But I can’t recall.

It’s terrifying when you look at the polling. 41% of democrats thought that you had a greater than 50% chance of hospitalization if you had Covid. The actual number is less than 1%.

76% of democrats polled thought big tech should censor more. 65% thought the GOVERNMENT should censor.

These sort of polling numbers are kinda terrifying to me. Like how do followers of parties buy into narratives hook line and sinker so hard. Does anyone think for themselves anymore?

You're young.  So am I, relatively speaking.  The post-Reconstruction "Solid South" was about as tribal as it gets.  My extremely conservative grandfather voted Democrat until the 1976 presidential election, out of pure party loyalty.  He finally recognized that the Democrats didn't represent his views at all and he was only undermining his own beliefs.

I blamed some of this on Trump
I had hoped that this would have lessened some over time and it has and will over more time

there doesn't seem to be much effort to unify or lessen this division

I blame a lot of it on Hillary Clinton as well.

I think 2016 f**ked this country up.

Why would you blame it on Trump?  That's part of the problem, really, if you didn't realize it was already ubiquitous before he was ever mentioned as a candidate.  It was happening long before he held office.  And unfortunately it will continue long after.

that's true, but I feel like Trump & Hillary threw some major gasoline on the already burning fire. both of them conducted themselves pretty poorly. and Hillary did not help with her pushing the Russia nonsense- just put Trump on the offensive and made him be even more of a dbag. he's not a guy you push into a corner- he just goes into conquer the world take no prisoners full asshole mode when you do that.
