Aww shit.  When betarhoalphadelta reads this word “ shithole” he is going to be triggered for 3 months.
I just think it's funny... The only functional difference between SoCal and SoFlo as far as I can tell is that I pay a little more in taxes. Traffic, cost of living, etc all seem to be pretty much insane in both places. And pretty much all the COVID restrictions Newsom has tried to enforce since the initial lockdown have resulted in the OC County Sheriff saying "eh, we're not gonna enforce that crap."

Orange County is pretty damn free by California standards. San Diego County would be a wonderful place to live.

Los Angeles County? Eh. I try to stay out of that shithole.

https://news.yahoo.com/russia-says-six-warships-heading-093509498.html

These are landing ships and they're accompanied by an attack sub. The kind of combination of assets used to stage an amphibious assault.
more war machine propaganda bs imo...Russia isn't invading Ukraine. This is overblown BS that US deep-state/intelligence/MIC has been pushing for over a year now. I think the actual President of Ukraine ripping Biden a new one in a private phone call and then publicly asking the US state department stenographers aka the "mainstream media" to STFU about invasion and then AP reporter Matt Lee clowning that little f**king CIA prick Ned Price when he went all Alex Jones - is all she wrote on this topic.

Russia announced months ago they were going to do these military exercises. Every damn country does them. Turkey is a NATO member, and they aren't going to sit back and let them in just so they can invade Ukraine. They'd close down the straits in a NY minute and shut Russia out if they really thought Russia was launching an invasion. Much ado about nothing.

It makes more sense to me if Putin is posturing to see what he can get from the West not to do a thing he wasn't going to do anyway, but likes to appear to be threatening it.  Then he moves slowly to destabilize Ukraine and when no one is looking, some part of it declares independence from Ukraine.

The West can be relied upon to dole out sanctions relief etc. for such negotiations.

See the thing about posturing is, it must be a credible threat in order to gain any negotiating power.

And if it's a credible threat, then it's a threat that must be responded to with military force.

Forcing NATO into a corner isn't a smart play here, but Putin's not a military genius-- he's a bully and a thug.  So assigning reasonable strategic thinking to him doesn't make any sense.

Yeah, the problem with making a credible threat in order to get the other side to give up concessions...

...is what you do if they don't give up any concessions.

Do you then have to carry through on the threat you never wanted to actually carry through in the first place? Backing NATO into a corner is a smart play if you get them to give you something... If you don't, you've put yourself in a corner because not following through on the threat makes you look weak and you'll never get concessions in the future because they know your threat may not be something you're willing to follow through on.

To the extent Russia massed forces on the border, it has the appearance of a threat.  Credible?  Maybe, that depends on your intel.

I don't think we have to respond militarily even to a credible threat, in all cases.

Nope, you just bide your time and chuckle that you really never meant to invade, just as you said.  Was Iran working on nuclear weapons?  They said they weren't, nobody found evidence they were since 2003, but they got concessions.  Either they were lying and are still working on them, or they were telling the truth and got concessions for nothing.

I think they realized a nuclear weapon with no delivery vehicle isn't worth much.

Which is precisely why many of the NATO countries don't want to back down.

We don't HAVE to do anything, but NATO by its very structure and nature is not an isolationist organization, and it's something the USA has put scores of years of investment into.  It's not easy for the US to dump its NATO allies.

Ukraine is not a member of NATO and Article V doesn't apply.
