How to lock your car and why

I locked my car. As I walked away I heard my car door unlock. I went back and locked my car again three times . Each time, as soon as I started to walk away, I would hear it unlock again!! Naturally alarmed, I looked around and there were two guys sitting in a car in the fire lane next to the store. They were obviously watching me intently, and there was no doubt they were somehow involved in this very weird situation . I quickly chucked the errand I was on, jumped in my car and sped away. I went straight to the police station, told them what had happened, and found out I was part of a new, and very successful, scheme being used to gain entry into cars. Two weeks later, my friend's son had a similar happening.... While traveling, my friend's son stopped at a roadside rest to use the bathroom. When he came out to his car less than 4-5 minutes later, someone had gotten into his car and stolen his cell phone, laptop computer, GPS navigator, briefcase.....you name it. He called the police and since there were no signs of his car being broken into, the police told him he had been a victim of the latest robbery tactic -- there is a device that robbers are using now to clone your security code when you lock your doors on your car using your key-chain locking device..

They sit a distance away and watch for their next victim. They know you are going inside of the store, restaurant, or bathroom and that they now have a few minutes to steal and run. The police officer said to manually lock your car door-by hitting the lock button inside the car -- that way if there is someone sitting in a parking lot watching for their next victim, it will not be you.

When you hit the lock button on your car upon exiting, it does not send the security code, but if you walk away and use the door lock on your key chain, it sends the code through the airwaves where it can be instantly stolen. This is very real.

Be wisely aware of what you just read and please pass this note on. Look how many times we all lock our doors with our remote just to be sure we remembered to lock them -- and bingo, someone has our code...and whatever was in our car. MANUALLY LOCK YOUR VEHICLE.

13 Movie Myths That Are Making Us All Dumber (ranker.com)
didn't get past #2 and how wrong it is. movies are not good representations, but an aed does not stop a heart so they can start cpr. an aed also won't really restart a completely flatlined stopped heart, but it most certainly doesn't stop a beating one, even one out of rhythm. they will kick one that's out of rhythm back into rhythm, and only works in certain circumstances. cpr is vitally important to helping this process, but an aed vastly increases chances of survival for cardiac arrests.

if you aren't yet, please get trained in cpr and aed use. they're extremely user friendly now, and relatively cheap, too. it's typically a 2-4 hr class, so not time consuming either.

2006 called and wants its mass FW:FW:FW: email back. :)

This is a highly unlikely scenario for anyone with a remote car lock newer than the mid 90s.

I can lock all the other doors by pushing the inside auto lock button, and then I have to manually push the lock lever on the driver door, if I REALLY want to lock it without the key fob.

I was on the Florida turnpike in December and the signs say they will read your tag and send you a bill.  I just got mine, over a month later, for $10.50, which a grainy photo of my car tag.  It's pretty neat really.

So hackers haven't made advances can't hurt to do it and with all the useless technology being implemented why not

I get confused as to how I'm billed when I've visited Austin in recent years with all the toll roads that have sprang up since I lived there.  Supposedly you can get one TxTag (I don't have one) and you're good.  But I get billed by 3 different entities in the mail.  TxTag is only one.  Why are there so many people sending me bills?  How do I know the others would leave me alone if I purchased a TxTag?

I recall worrying about garage door hackers back in the day, they'd transmit codes until one hit and opened your door.  This sounds plausible to me but I never heard of it being a thing, perhaps because thieves generally are not very smart.

No they really haven't made advances, not against the second generation of wireless entry, which has been around since the late 90s.  It's not that it can't be done, it's just that it's time-consuming and tedious and your average parking lot based thief is pretty lazy and stupid.

And if you’re skilled enough to do that, you can probably find lucrative legit work? Maybe.

Let’s face it, the classics are classics for a reason. Spark plug on a string for the window and you’re in. (I’m sure this is not the case anymore, but it’s a good visual)

Good point, that could certainly be a factor.

if you read the whole link you posted it says they have advanced to using boosters for the new fobs that you don't even need to press the button to work. it says it's relatively cheap and easy to make the boosters too. even has a video of one in use.

i've never heard of it until that snopes article you posted, but it's apparently a thing.

i'm not worried about it though. my vehicle doesn't even have an 80's version fob, just good old fashion keys.
